Detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology of the Lunpola basin strata constrains the Cenozoic tectonic evolution of central Tibet

Xiaohui Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the uplift history of the central Tibetan plateau through the analysis of zircon grains in the Lunpola basin sediments. The results reveal that the central Tibetan plateau experienced crustal thickening and surface elevation increase from the Paleogene to the Oligocene, which may be associated with convective removal of a thickened Tibetan lithosphere.

Zircon as a pathfinder for ore exploration

Huan Li et al.

Summary: Despite little attention given to the implications of zircon morphological, geochronological, and geochemical aspects in ore systems, this study highlights the robustness of zircons as a pathfinder for ore exploration using data from various granite-related and other deposit types. The results demonstrate that zircons from W-Sn-related granites contain higher concentrations of certain elements compared to Cu-Mo-related granite. Different zircon abundances in vein-type and skarn-type deposits are attributed to variations in magmatic differentiation, veining processes, and contact-metasomatism. Diagrams and discrimination analysis are proposed to distinguish the metallogenetic potential of these deposit types. The findings have significant implications for exploring economic minerals in similar ore deposits worldwide.

Discriminating Qiangtang, Lhasa, and Himalayan sediment sources in the Tibetan Plateau by detrital-zircon U-Pb age and Hf isotope facies

Weiwei Xue et al.

Summary: Detrital zircon data from the Tibetan Plateau were analyzed using a new method that identified distinct detrital-zircon age facies in different geological domains. The study successfully distinguished source regions and provided insights into the provenance of sedimentary units in diverse geological terranes. The combination of detrital-zircon age facies and multidimensional scaling methods proved to be an effective approach for provenance analysis.

Paleogeographic and tectonic evolution of Mesozoic Qiangtang basins (Tibet)

Anlin Ma et al.

Summary: Reconstructing the Mesozoic paleotectonic and paleogeographic evolution of marine Qiangtang basins is essential for understanding the evolution of diverse Tethyan oceanic seaways and pre-Cenozoic mountain building in the Tibetan Plateau, with significant implications for hydrocarbon exploration. The geological knowledge of these basins is, however, largely incomplete. This study provides new geological mapping, stratigraphic, structural, sedimentological, and provenance data to fill the gaps in understanding the evolution of Qiangtang basins.

Cenozoic low temperature cooling history of the eastern Lhasa terrane: Implications for high-relief topography of external drainage area in the southern Tibetan Plateau

Wenbo Su et al.

Summary: The external drainage area in the southern Tibetan Plateau experienced three main phases of rapid cooling in the Cenozoic: Paleocene-early Eocene, late Eocene to early Oligocene, and middle Miocene-early Pliocene. These cooling events were younger than those in the internal drainage area, and the high-relief topography in the external drainage area started to form around 30 Ma.

Late Mesozoic-Cenozoic multistage exhumation of the central Bangong-Nujiang Suture, Central Tibet

Chao Li et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the cooling history of the Gaize Basin in the central Bangong-Nujiang Suture (BNS) using new low-temperature thermochronology data. The results indicate three cooling stages in the Gaize Basin related to the closure of the BNS, far-field effects of the Neo-Tethyan oceanic subduction, and the India-Asian collision.

Cenozoic paleoelevation history of the Lunpola Basin in Central Tibet: New evidence from volcanic glass hydrogen isotopes and a critical review

Lin Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the paleoelevation history and geodynamic evolution of the Bangong suture zone in the central Tibetan Plateau using stable isotope-based paleoaltimetry. The results suggest a three-stage topographic growth model for Central Tibet, highlighting the contribution of convective removal, underthrusting of the Indian lower crust, and crustal flow to surface uplift.

An Oligocene-Miocene intermontane narrow lowland in the central Tibetan Plateau: Insights from provenance analysis and palynological record of a Cenozoic sedimentary succession

Xu Han et al.

Summary: The sedimentology, zircon U-Pb ages, and palynological records of the Niubao Formation in the Avengco Basin, central Tibet, were analyzed to understand the formation process of the intermontane lowland. The Niubao Formation consists of different sediment types and the palynological assemblages suggest it was deposited during the Oligocene-Miocene. The provenance analysis indicates bidirectional sources for the Formation, including the Southern Qiangtang terrane and/or Bangong-Nujiang suture zone in the north, and the Northern Lhasa terrane in the south. The paleoelevation estimated from the palynological records suggests a lower elevation for the Avengco Basin compared to the Lhasa and Qiangtang terranes during the Oligocene-Miocene. Based on previous studies, the intermontane lowland along the Bangong-Nujiang suture zone was proposed to have formed during the Oligocene and extended to the Avengco Basin in the west.

Eocene-Oligocene glaciation on a high central Tibetan Plateau

Guoqing Xia et al.

Summary: Intermittent cryospheric processes occurred in the midlatitude Northern Hemisphere during the late Eocene and Eocene-Oligocene transition, as evidenced by the presence of frost marks, ice-rafted debris (IRD), and glendonites in the Lunpola Basin of the central Tibetan Plateau. These cryospheric deposits, dated to approximately 36.2-31.8 Ma, provide robust continental evidence for the influence of the global cold snap EOT-1 on already glacierized high-altitude mountains, resulting in the development of ice fields, ice caps, and valley glaciers with proglacial lake systems.

Timing and mechanisms of Tibetan Plateau uplift

Lin Ding et al.

Summary: This review discusses the temporal and spatial distribution of surface uplift in the Tibetan Plateau and the geodynamic mechanisms behind it. The initial collision between India and Asia and the subsequent formation of the high Tibetan Plateau are still not well understood, but the uplift is primarily controlled by delamination and break-off of the subducted Indian and Asian lithosphere.

Why 'the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau' is a myth

Robert A. Spicer et al.

Summary: The uplift of the Tibetan Plateau was not solely caused by the collision and northward movement of India, but rather a complex process involving the collision of several Gondwanan terranes with Asia during the Mesozoic. New synthetic views incorporating Earth system modeling, paleoaltimetry proxies, and fossil finds help reveal the true topographic evolution of Tibet.

Timing of closure of the Meso-Tethys Ocean: Constraints from remnants of a 141-135 Ma ocean island within the Bangong-Nujiang Suture Zone, Tibetan Plateau

Jian-Jun Fan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the Zhonggang igneous-sedimentary rocks in the Bangong-Nujiang Suture Zone, providing evidence that they are remnants of an ocean island within the Meso-Tethys Ocean. The closure of the Meso-Tethys Ocean and collision of the Lhasa and Qiangtang terranes likely occurred after approximately 135 million years ago, based on zircon U-Pb dates and geochemical analysis.
