Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley reduction in current heterogeneous catalysis research: a review

Juan Francisco Minambres et al.

Summary: Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley (MPV) reduction is a selective process that catalyzes the synthesis of alcohols from aldehydes and ketones. Despite extensive research, questions about the catalytic process remain unanswered. This review focuses on recent advances in MPV, including the catalytic materials used and their properties, as well as new applications in biomass transformation and the synthesis of valuable products.

Conversion of biomass-derived feedstocks into value-added chemicals over single-atom catalysts

Sudipta De et al.

Summary: This review summarizes recent studies on the applications of single-atom catalysts (SACs) in the selective transformation of biomass-derived feedstocks into value-added products. SACs, with their selective nature, high atom efficiency, and tunable active sites, have shown great potential in achieving high selectivity towards complex molecules at a reduced cost.

Renewable bio-based routes to γ-valerolactone in the presence of hafnium nanocrystalline or hierarchical microcrystalline zeotype catalysts

Margarida M. Antunes et al.

Summary: This research studied different renewable bio-based routes for the synthesis of versatile bioproduct gamma-valerolactone (GVL) using multifunctional hafnium-containing catalysts in alcohol media. The study identified a hierarchical zeotype Hf-WdeSAlBeta-m as the best-performing catalyst for GVL production, thanks to its enhanced acidity and mesoporosity. The results highlight the catalytic potential of these materials for integrated GVL production.

Understanding the role of Al/Zr ratio in Zr-Al-Beta zeolite: Towards the one-pot production of GVL from glucose

Marta Paniagua et al.

Summary: By combining Zr and Al as active sites within a BEA zeolite structure, the distribution of products can be influenced and the yields of GVL and isopropyl lactate can be improved. Adjusting the Al/Zr ratio has a strong impact on the catalyst's performance, leading to higher GVL yields with an increase in Zr content and low content of Al acid sites.

Coupled Transfer Hydrogenation and Alcoholysis of Furfural To Yield Alkyl Levulinate over Multifunctional Zirconia-Zeolite-Supported Heteropoly Acid

Lincai Peng et al.

Summary: In this study, a bifunctional zirconia-zeolite-supported heteropoly acid catalyst was successfully designed to convert furfural to alkyl levulinate through a one-pot conversion combining transfer hydrogenation and alcoholysis. The selectivity towards alkyl levulinate was observed to be strongly influenced by the distribution of acid sites, with the HPMo(20)/Zr-MCM-41 catalyst showing high efficiency with isopropanol as a hydrogen donor. This monolithic catalyst exhibited good stability and could be reused multiple times without significant change in product yield.

Summary: A magnetically-recoverable multifunctional catalyst was tailored for the conversion of furfural to gamma-valerolactone, achieving a high yield with iso-propanol as a hydrogen donor and solvent. The catalyst showed good reusability and sustainability with the process intensification based on one-pot reaction and mild operating conditions without gaseous hydrogen.
