First-principles Phonon Calculations with Phonopy and Phono3py

Atsushi Togo

Summary: With the advancement of calculation methods and increasing computer power, first-principles phonon calculations are becoming more accurate in predicting the harmonic, quasi-harmonic, and anharmonic phonon properties of crystals. This review examines the basic formulas for phonon properties and provides examples of phonon calculations using the phonon calculation codes, phonopy and phono3py, combined with first-principles calculations. The automation of first-principles phonon calculations is of great interest to the scientific community, and this review also presents several practical applications of this automated approach.

Strain-tunable quantum anomalous Hall effect/quantum anomalous valley Hall effect in two-dimensional ferromagnetic non-Dirac topological half-metal N2Pd4S6

Xin Yang et al.

Summary: The topologically nontrivial phase and quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect were predicted in the ferromagnetic non-Dirac half-metal N2Pd4S6 monolayer using first-principles calculations. The N2Pd4S6 monolayer prefers out-of-plane magnetization and exhibits a Curie temperature of similar to 80 K due to dual double-exchange interaction. The introduction of magnetic exchange and spin-orbit coupling enables the realization of the topologically nontrivial phase and QAH state, as well as the unique quantum anomalous valley Hall (QAVH) effect induced by compressive strain.

Electronic and optical properties of two-dimensional III2-VI3 materials with the FE-WZ ' structure

Xianghui Meng et al.

Summary: Using first-principles calculations, we studied the properties of 2D In2Te3 (FE-WZ' phase) family, including mechanical, phonon, electronic, and optical properties. The materials exhibit strong mechanical strength, with Al2S3 being the strongest. Phonon calculations reveal the dominant out-of-plane vibrations in the lowest-frequency acoustic branch. Spin-orbit coupling in In2Se3 and In2Te3 converts them into direct semiconductors. These materials have an electrostatic potential difference in the infrared region, making them good candidates for water splitting. In2Se3 shows a solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of 28.6%, which is significant for commercial applications.

Magic angles and flat Chern bands in alternating-twist multilayer graphene system

Zhiyong Liu et al.

Summary: Based on the effective continuum model, this study investigates the emergence of magic angles and flat band topology in alternating-twist multilayer graphene systems. It is found that all of the systems have flat bands at the magic angles, which provide a new avenue for understanding superconductivity and realizing anomalous Hall effect.

Topological flat bands in a kagome lattice multiorbital system

Satoshi Okamoto et al.

Summary: This study theoretically demonstrates the interplay between nontrivial band topology and electronic interaction in a multiorbital system on a kagome lattice. Specifically, it is shown that the multiorbital kagome model with atomic spin-orbit coupling naturally supports topological bands characterized by nonzero Chern numbers, and can induce a fractional Chern insulating state when a flat band is 1/3 filled. Possible realization of these findings in real kagome materials is also discussed.

Moire induced topology and flat bands in twisted bilayer WSe2: A first-principles study

Sudipta Kundu et al.

Summary: We study the influence of strong spin-orbit interaction on the formation of flat bands in relaxed twisted bilayer WSe2. Flat bands emerge at twist angles near 0 degrees and 60 degrees, with the electronic structure being determined by interlayer hybridization and a moire potential for angles near 0 degrees, and by atomic rearrangements in the individual layers for angles near 60 degrees. Our findings match well with recent experimental observations.

Thermal transport of boron pyrochlore lattices

Cheng Peng et al.

Summary: The pyrochlore lattice exhibits unique electronic and magnetic properties, and its thermal conductivity is greatly affected by flat bands and phonon scatterings. Bandgap engineering plays a significant role in thermal transport, allowing for modulation of phonon scatterings to change the thermal conductivity of the structure.

Isolated flat bands in a lattice of interlocking circles

Siwen Li et al.

Summary: A new lattice structure, named the interlocking-circles lattice, is proposed to generate isolated flat bands in graphene by hydrogenation. This structure results in the splitting of flat bands into spin-polarized bands upon hole or electron doping, leading to ferromagnetic graphene. This work not only introduces a new lattice type, but also provides a pathway to search for systems with isolated flat bands.
