3D-printed red mud/metakaolin-based geopolymers as water pollutant sorbents of methylene blue

Nuno P. F. Goncalves et al.

Summary: This study presents a new management strategy for bauxite residue or red mud (RM), a hazardous waste derived from the alumina industry. Porous structures containing RM were prepared for the extraction of methylene blue (MB) from synthetic wastewater. The structures exhibited high compressive strength, high open porosity, large specific surface area, and excellent stability. Batch adsorption tests showed that the RM/MK-based structures had a high MB uptake, ranking them among the best performing geopolymer adsorbents. Furthermore, the structures were successfully regenerated and reused without compromising their performance.

Metakaolin/red mud-derived geopolymer monoliths: Novel bulk-type sorbents for lead removal from wastewaters

Joao Carvalheiras et al.

Summary: The study synthesized geopolymer monoliths using metakaolin and red mud as solid precursors, which have hierarchical porosity and suitable compressive strength, making them effective bulk-type sorbents for heavy metal removal. The use of red mud-containing geopolymer monoliths in extracting lead from wastewater was evaluated, and the results showed high lead removal capacity and successful regeneration for multiple sorption cycles. These findings contribute to the potential industrial application of clay derived geopolymers in wastewater treatment and provide a sustainable recycling strategy for red mud waste.

In situ remediation of metal(loid)-contaminated lake sediments with alkali-activated blast furnace slag granule amendment: A field experiment

Johanna Laukkanen et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of alkali-activated blast furnace slag (BFS) granules in remediating metal-contaminated sediments in situ. The results showed that the granules effectively decreased the mobility of metals in the sediments, and the estimated material costs were lower than other remediation methods. Further research is needed to investigate the leaching of trace elements from the material and its impact on sediment pH.

Comparative study of Pb2+, Ni2+, and methylene blue adsorption on spherical waste solid-based geopolymer adsorbents enhanced with carbon nanotubes

Shu Yan et al.

Summary: Spherical porous carbon nanotube-reinforced geopolymer (CNTs/GP) adsorbents were prepared by combining carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with a fly ash and slag-based geopolymer slurry and spheroidizing in poly-ethylene glycol 400 solvent. The CNTs/GP spheres exhibited a perfect spherical shape, mesoporous structure, and enhanced adsorption efficiency for methylene blue (MB) and heavy metals (Pb2+ and Ni2+). The adsorption data of the spheres followed Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetics models, suggesting multiple mechanisms were involved. The CNTs/GP spheres also exhibited good cyclic regeneration properties, making them promising adsorbents for hazardous wastewater treatment.

Adsorption behaviour of simulant radionuclide cations and anions in metakaolin-based geopolymer

Xiaobo Niu et al.

Summary: Geopolymers are considered promising materials for radioactive waste disposal, with metakaolin-based geopolymers showing high capacity to immobilise cationic radionuclides. However, they do not have the ability to incorporate anionic radionuclides, and the adsorption capacity varies depending on the source of metakaolin. Cs+ uptake occurs through one-to-one exchange with K+ in MK-GP.
