Stablecoins as a tool to mitigate the downside risk of cryptocurrency portfolios

Antonio Diaz et al.

Summary: This paper empirically assesses the ability of three putative stablecoins (two dollar-backed, Tether and USD Coin; and one gold-backed, Digix Gold) to mitigate the risk of facing severe losses (downside risk) of a traditional cryptocurrency portfolio. Stablecoins, however, are not as stable as their name and collateralized peg suggest. The empirical evidence shows that the low conditional correlations of dollar-backed stablecoins with cryptocurrency portfolios make them particularly suitable as a hedge for crypto investors.

Time and frequency connectedness and portfolio diversification between cryptocurrencies and renewable energy stock markets during COVID-19

Zijian Li et al.

Summary: The study highlights the importance of assessing the time and frequency connectedness between cryptocurrencies and renewable energy stock markets for portfolio diversification. Results show that renewable energy stocks play a key role in the connectedness system, with short-run spillovers dominating long-run ones. Investors can benefit from short-run transactions and optimize portfolios by investing a large portion in cryptocurrencies, although the effectiveness of hedging strategies can be reversed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

A clean, green haven?-Examining the relationship between clean energy, clean and dirty cryptocurrencies

Boru Ren et al.

Summary: This paper investigates whether clean energy can serve as a safe haven for cryptocurrencies and analyzes their relationship. The results show that clean energy is not a direct hedge for cryptocurrencies, but it can act as a weak safe haven in extreme bearish markets. Additionally, clean energy is more likely to be a safe haven for dirty cryptocurrencies during periods of increased uncertainty.

Zaghum Umar et al.

Summary: The study reveals that demand shocks and risk shocks are the dominant receivers or transmitters of metal returns. Some metals act as net transmitters while others act as net receivers during the sample period. Do Green Bonds Act as a Hedge or a Safe Haven against Economic Policy Uncertainty? Evidence from the USA and China

Inzamam Ul Haq et al.

Summary: This study explores the dynamic association between economic policy uncertainty, green bonds, clean energy stocks, and rare earth elements. Green bonds serve as a hedge rather than a safe haven against economic policy uncertainty, while clean energy stocks and rare earth elements show safe haven properties. Additionally, green bonds act as diversifiers with clean energy stocks and rare earth elements in the case of portfolio diversification.

Green bonds as hedging assets before and after COVID: A comparative study between the US and China

Dong Guo et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the fragility of the global financial market during rare disasters, with green bonds emerging as important tools for hedging against climate, financial, and pandemic risks. Despite a decrease in hedging effectiveness during the pandemic, the focus remains on mitigating tail risks rather than normal risks, particularly in forex markets. Green bonds in the US and China exhibit convergence in several aspects, indicating a smaller cross-country difference than cross-asset difference.
