Neural Efficiency and Ability to Produce Accurate Efforts in Different Perceived Intensity Zones

Victor Scholler et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between neural efficiency and the ability of athletes to produce accurate efforts in different perceived intensity zones during a racing scenario. It found that the increase in neural efficiency was related to the improvement in athletes' ability to produce accurate perceived efforts from intensity zones 3 to 6. Additionally, neural efficiency during the racing scenario was significantly correlated with the ability to produce accurate perceived efforts at submaximal intensities.

A pilot study investigating cortical haemodynamic and physiological correlates of exercise cognition in trained and untrained cyclists over an incremental self-paced performance test, while thinking aloud

Summary: This study utilized functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy and Think Aloud method to investigate changes in cortical haemodynamics, conscious cognition, and physiological performance during a self-paced interval endurance activity. Trained cyclists showed higher power output compared to untrained cyclists, and conscious cognition may vary over time.

Structural and functional brain signatures of endurance runners

Long Cao et al.

Summary: In this study, using multimodal MRI data, differences in brain structural and functional characteristics were found between endurance runners and healthy controls. Endurance runners showed greater gray matter volume, cortical surface area, functional connectivity, and fractional anisotropy in various regions compared to controls. These findings suggest that these brain characteristics may be a result of regular endurance running training, but further research is needed to determine if they are neural correlates of good endurance running performance.
