Boosting the overall electrochemical water splitting performance of pentlandites through non-metallic heteroatom incorporation

Mohamed Barakat Zakaria Hegazy et al.

Summary: In this study, the synthesis of heterotrimetallic pentlandite-type material Fe3Co3Ni3S8 (FCNS) in the presence of suitable phosphorus and nitrogen donors for electrochemical water splitting was reported. The preferential incorporation of N into the FCNS lattice was observed, while the addition of phosphorus led to metal-phosphate-FCNS composites. The doped FCNS materials showed improved performance in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) compared to the pristine FCNS.

Trimetallic Pentlandites (Fe,Co,Ni)9S8 for the Electrocatalytical HER in Acidic Media

Mathias Smialkowski et al.

Summary: Recently, pentlandite materials have been found to have promising properties for the hydrogen evolution reaction. By synthesizing a series of trimetallic FeCoNi-pentlandite materials and composites through high-temperature synthesis and categorizing them by purity, we have determined their electrocatalytic properties for the hydrogen evolution reaction. These properties were then correlated to hydrogen adsorption energies calculated using density functional theory (DFT), providing insights into the activity and origin of the pentlandite system and guiding meaningful approaches for catalyst synthesis.

Effect of long-term storage on the electronic structure of semiconducting silicon wafers implanted by rhenium ions

D. A. Zatsepin et al.

Summary: Rhenium-doped silicon samples were synthesized by ion implantation and stored under natural air conditions for 5 years. The study of electronic structure using XPS and DFT methods revealed weak acidification in the samples rather than normal rhenium oxidation, with no evidence of sub-oxide fractures. The influence of air media led to the appearance of bonding structures in the aged samples, indicating a preferential pairing of Re atoms in low concentrations and clusterization in high concentrations of ion-doping regime.

Comparing electrocatalytic hydrogen and oxygen evolution activities of first-row transition metal complexes with similar coordination environments

Xiaotong Jin et al.

Summary: The synthesis of a series of metal complexes of azido-substituted porphyrin with similar coordination environments was reported, and the resulting hybrids grafted onto carbon nanotubes showed high activity for both the hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction in alkaline aqueous solutions. Among these hybrids, 1-Fe@CNT exhibited the highest electrocatalytic activity for HER, while 1-Co@CNT was the most active for OER. Assembling a two-electrode water electrolysis cell with 1-Fe@CNT as the cathode and 1-Co@CNT as the anode required a smaller applied bias potential by 210 mV compared to traditional Pt/C and Ir/C catalysts.
