Grief at the Heart of the Opioid Overdose Crisis: Past Lessons and Present Implications

Kenneth L. Morford et al.

Summary: Individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) bear a significant emotional burden in response to opioid overdose deaths, but clinicians often overlook the impact of grief on their patients and their treatment outcomes. Lessons from the AIDS epidemic and crack cocaine crisis can be applied to improve care for people with OUD in the context of stigma and social injustices.

Summary: The S-O-S initiative aims to prevent opioid overdose deaths by providing training on overdose recognition and response, as well as distributing naloxone kits. Participants in the initiative expressed appreciation for the opportunity to participate in the training and highlighted the positive outcomes of feeling valued and cared about. However, fear of police intervention emerged as a barrier to carrying naloxone and intervening in overdose situations.

Frequency of fatal and non-fatal overdoses and response to grief and loss among people who inject drugs: An unexplored dimension of the opioid overdose crisis

Kathleen S. Kenny et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between overdose events and grief and loss responses among people who inject drugs. While overall treatment importance did not significantly change across the entire sample, participants who used naloxone showed a notable increase in treatment importance following the event. Further research is needed to determine if the impact of an overdose event can be leveraged to enhance treatment engagement.

An Inside Perspective of the Opioid Overdose Crisis in Vancouver: A Secondary Qualitative Study

Michaela Kelly et al.

Summary: The study explored the perceptions of the opioid crisis among individuals living in poverty and using illicit substances in Vancouver's DTES. Findings revealed that DTES residents have been heavily impacted by the overwhelming trauma of the opioid crisis, but participants also spoke of community responsiveness and responsibility. As a result, peer harm reduction training programs should consider the potential emotional impact on new peers, and trauma-informed care should acknowledge that many members of this community are grieving.

Survivor guilt: a cognitive approach

Hannah Murray et al.

Summary: Survivor guilt is a common experience following traumatic events in which others have died, but little research has addressed the phenomenology of survivor guilt or conceptualized it using contemporary psychological models to guide effective treatment approaches for clinicians. This paper summarizes the current research literature on survivor guilt and related psychological models, proposing a preliminary cognitive approach. The proposed model and treatment strategies require further study and empirical validation, but provide testable hypotheses for stimulating future research in this area.

Conceptualizing overdose trauma: The relationships between experiencing and witnessing overdoses with PTSD symptoms among street-recruited female sex workers in Baltimore, Maryland

Kristin E. Schneider et al.

Summary: The opioid crisis has led to frequent overdoses among marginalized populations like female sex workers, causing significant psychological trauma. Experiencing overdoses is associated with PTSD symptoms, while witnessing overdoses is linked to PTSD diagnoses and symptoms like intrusive thoughts and heightened arousal. Structural barriers and overlapping symptoms with drug effects make it challenging for existing PTSD measures to accurately assess the impact of overdose traumas in populations like FSW.
