Deep learning forecast of rainfall-induced shallow landslides

Alessandro C. Mondini et al.

Summary: Rainfall-triggered landslides pose threats to people and the environment in all mountain ranges. Due to projected climate changes, the risk of landslides is expected to increase, emphasizing the need to anticipate their occurrence. This study proposes a deep-learning based strategy to link rainfall to landslide occurrence, which effectively predicts their location and timing, opening up the possibility of operational landslide forecasting based on rainfall measurements and meteorological forecasts.

FSLAM: A QGIS plugin for fast regional susceptibility assessment of rainfall-induced landslides

Zizheng Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, we designed and developed a Python QGIS plugin called FSLAM for assessing the susceptibility of shallow slope failures triggered by rainfall in mountainous areas. The plugin integrates a simplified hydrological model and a geotechnical model, and outputs raster maps to describe the hydrological and stability conditions.

Global Landslide Forecasting System for Hazard Assessment and Situational Awareness

Sana Khan et al.

Summary: Landslide forecasting systems are important for mitigating the devastating effects of landslides triggered by extreme rainfall. The study introduces a precipitation forecast module into the satellite-based Landslide Hazard Assessment for Situational Awareness (LHASA) system, providing near real-time estimates of landslide hazard up to 3 days in advance. The model shows promise in resolving major landslide events triggered by extreme rainfall and serves as an important milestone in global landslide hazard prediction.

Regional-scale modeling of rainfall-induced landslides under random rainfall patterns

Lianheng Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the triggering and evolution of rainfall-induced landslides using a regional-scale physical model. The study found that random rainfall patterns affect the evolution of triggered landslides and the cumulative landslide area. The study contributes to our understanding of the diversity and discipline of rainfall-induced landslide evolution.

Definition of 3D rainfall thresholds to increase operative landslide early warning system performances

Ascanio Rosi et al.

Summary: This study examines the definition and effectiveness of 3D rainfall thresholds in a region in Northern Italy, presenting a new approach to warning systems that can significantly reduce false alarms by considering factors such as average rainfall amount in each alert zone. The results suggest promising perspectives for the development of regional warning systems.

Data-Driven Landslide Nowcasting at the Global Scale

Thomas A. Stanley et al.

Summary: The LHASA model is a global tool for landslide hazard assessment, providing updated maps of potentially hazardous areas every 3 hours. LHASA version 2 adopts a data-driven approach, enhancing the accuracy of the model by introducing new variables and a machine-learning framework. Through comparison with LHASA version 1, LHASA version 2 shows significant improvement in the global nowcast capability for landslides.
