Warming temperatures exacerbate groundwater depletion rates in India

Summary: Climate change is expected to increase crop water demand, leading to more irrigation. A study in India, a groundwater depletion hotspot, reveals that farmers have intensified groundwater withdrawals to adapt to warming temperatures, resulting in accelerated depletion rates. Even with projected increases in precipitation and possible decreases in irrigation use, the rates of net groundwater loss for the coming decades could be three times the current depletion rates, posing a threat to India's food and water security.

Summary: The return of pink bollworm infestations in farmers' fields in India, after the loss of effectiveness of genetically engineered Bt cotton, has caused severe losses in yield and income for farmers. This study argues that Bt cotton, as a neoliberal technology, not only temporarily protects farmers from pests but also accelerates the concentration of capital. The dispossession of resource-poor households and the accumulation of capital through redistribution of assets contribute to the reproduction of hegemonic structures.
