Challenges and Opportunities in 3D Laser Printing Based on (1+1)-Photon Absorption

Vincent Hahn et al.

Summary: Most light-based 3D printing methods rely on optical or chemical nonlinearities for polymerization reactions. Two-photon absorption is commonly used in 3D micro-and nanoprinting, but this article reviews three emerging processes that allow for quadratic nonlinearity without relying on two-photon absorption, namely upconversion luminescence, two-step absorption, and triplet-triplet annihilation. These (1 + 1)-photon absorption processes enable the use of continuous-wave lasers at lower peak powers and cost compared to two-photon absorption. The article discusses recent progress, challenges, and future perspectives.

Visible-Light-Reactive Single-Chain Nanoparticles

Kai Mundsinger et al.

Summary: We present a single-chain nanoparticle (SCNP) system that exhibits three times higher catalytic efficiency for the photooxidation of nonpolar alkenes compared to an equivalent concentration of small-molecule photosensitizer. The SCNP is constructed using poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate and glycidyl methacrylate, compacted through multifunctional thiol-epoxide ligation, and functionalized with Rose Bengal (RB). The confined RB within the SCNP achieves enhanced photocatalysis for nonpolar alkenes due to spatial proximity in the hydrophobic region.

Customization of Supramolecular Hydrogels through One-Step Photopolymerization and Its Mechanism

Ruifen Tang et al.

Summary: A series of transparent hydrogels with highly tunable properties were achieved through a simple one-step method of free-radical photopolymerization (FRPP) using a single monomer. The properties of these hydrogels were adjusted by changing the polymer chain length and intermolecular interactions. The study also found temperature-dependence in the photoinitiator decomposition rate and internal interactions of the hydrogels, which could inspire further research in FRPP.

Summary: This paper introduces the 800 nm two-photon pulsed laser polymerization (PLP) and demonstrates its working principle through biological tissue. The reliability of 2P PLP in determining propagation rate coefficients is shown using the example of the free radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) at frequencies ranging from 10 to 100 Hz.

Near Infrared Light Induced Radical Polymerization in Water

Philipp Neidinger et al.

Summary: This study introduces a gold nanorod-driven methodology to induce free radical polymerization in water using near infrared light. The process utilizes photothermal conversion and heat transfer to generate radicals, allowing control over the molecular weight and reaction conversion of the polymers. The results demonstrate the potential of this initiation mechanism for inducing polymerization in biological environments.

Effect of non-alignment on nearfield coupling, charge density and sensitivity to the host medium of a gold nanorod homodimer

Mohammed Alsawafta

Summary: This study investigates the impact of non-alignment on the plasmonic coupling parameters between two gold nanorods, focusing on the resonance wavelength, nearfield intensity, charge density, and sensitivity factor. The results from the FDTD electrodynamics simulation tool show that the parameters decay exponentially as the interparticle spacing increases, indicating contributions from both multipolar and dipolar modes to the plasmonic coupling. On the other hand, when the two resonators are shifted transversely away from each other, the resonance wavelength and sensitivity factor of the coupled mode decay sigmoidally. The behavior of the other two coupling parameters, charge density and nearfield enhancement factor, depends on the transverse shift in a complex manner. Overall, the findings suggest that the coupling parameters in non-aligned resonators cannot be predicted by the existing universal scaling behavior in metallic homodimers.

Vat Photopolymerization Additive Manufacturing Technology for Bone Tissue Engineering Applications

David Bahati et al.

Summary: Additive manufacturing using Vat photopolymerization (VPP) techniques such as digital light processing (DLP) and stereolithography (SLA) has revolutionized the production of three-dimensional objects. These techniques offer high accuracy, precision, and the ability to create complex porous structures at a lower cost and in less time compared to traditional subtractive manufacturing. DLP and SLA are particularly suitable for medical applications, including bone tissue engineering, due to their mechanical and biological properties.
