A calcium and zinc composite alginate hydrogel for pre-hospital hemostasis and wound care

Abhishek Kumar et al.

Summary: We developed a sodium alginate-based Ca2+ and Zn2+ composite hydrogel (SA-CZ) and evaluated its hemostatic potential. SA-CZ hydrogel exhibited significant in-vitro efficacy, reducing coagulation time and improving blood coagulation index without causing hemolysis. In a hemorrhage model in mice, SA-CZ significantly decreased bleeding time and mean blood loss. It also promoted cellular migration and wound closure in-vitro and in-vivo. Importantly, SA-CZ demonstrated good biocompatibility and non-thromboembolic nature, making it a safe and effective aid for bleeding wounds.
