Structural characterization of the near-surface region of soda-lime-silica glass by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Barsheek Roy et al.

Summary: This study investigated the structural chemistry of the near-surface region of soda-lime-silica (SLS) glass using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results showed variations in the concentration of bridging oxygen, non-bridging oxygen, and hydrous species as a function of depth. The presence of hydrous species, particularly associated with silanol groups, was found to be vital in determining the near-surface structure of SLS glass.

Local environment of iodine dissolved as iodate in high-pressure aluminoborosilicate glasses: A I K-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopic study

Yann Morizet et al.

Summary: This study used X-ray absorption spectroscopy to determine the local atomic environment of iodine in different forms in aluminoborosilicate glasses. The results revealed that iodide ions (I-) were surrounded by Na+ or Ca2+, while iodate ions (I5+) were surrounded by three oxygen atoms. The I-O distance in iodate ions in glasses was comparable to the distance in crystalline compounds.

Predicting iodine solubility at high pressure in borosilicate nuclear waste glasses using optical basicity: an experimental study

Yann Morizet et al.

Summary: This study investigates the change in iodine solubility in borosilicate glasses synthesized under high-pressure conditions. The results show that the iodine solubility is influenced by the network modifying cation and the concentration of B2O3. Iodine in the glasses is mainly represented by iodide. The study also explores the relationship between iodine solubility and the electron donor capability of the glass, as well as the oxygen network in the glasses.

The influence of iodide on glass transition temperature of high-pressure nuclear waste glasses

Valentin Jolivet et al.

Summary: The glass transition temperature (T-g) was investigated for borosilicate glasses used in nuclear waste immobilization with different levels of iodine (I) added. The results showed that the addition of I decreased T-g, with a stronger effect observed in ISG compared to NH glass compositions. The difference in T-g decrease was attributed to the dissolution mechanism of I and its impact on the boron network polymerization.

Chemical durability evaluation of silver phosphate?based glasses designed for the conditioning of radioactive iodine

A-L Chabauty et al.

Summary: Silver phosphate glasses were studied for conditioning of radioactive iodine 129, with Nb2O5 and Bi2O3 as crosslinking agents. The impact of these modifications on glass chemical durability, especially the addition of Nb2O5, was significant in reducing phosphorus release rates and forming a passivating layer in long-term alteration tests. The results suggest that elemental release in solution alone may underestimate alteration rates, emphasizing the importance of considering different elements in glass composition.

Immobilization of 129I in nuclear waste glass matrixes synthesized under high-pressure conditions: an experimental study

Yann Morizet et al.

Summary: This study explores the use of high-pressure synthesis to enhance the solubility of I in aluminoborosilicate glasses, providing a potential solution for the immobilization of I-129 in nuclear waste. The research demonstrates that high-pressure conditions significantly increase the I solubility in glasses, particularly in Na-rich compositions, and oxidized I waste form should be utilized to further improve I solubility.
