A green and fast microwave-assisted synthesis of selenium nanoparticles and their characterization under gastrointestinal conditions using mass spectrometry

Magdalena Borowska et al.

Summary: A novel microwave-assisted green synthesis of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) using yeast extract as a non-toxic reducing and capping agent was presented. The effects of synthesis and gastrointestinal digestion conditions on the size distribution and concentration of biogenic Se particles were evaluated. It was found that the size of SeNPs varied depending on the synthesis conditions, and their size changed after incubation in simulated gastric juice but returned to the initial value after simulated intestinal juice addition. Biomolecules in yeast extract were identified and found to play a predominant role in the synthesis of SeNPs using LC Orbitrap ESI MS. This study provides important insights into the formation and behavior of SeNPs under gastrointestinal conditions, which is crucial for their potential use as a selenium source.

Optimization of elemental selenium (Se(0)) determination in yeasts by anion-exchange HPLC-ICP-MS

Veronique Vacchina et al.

Summary: An analytical method was developed to confirm the presence of elemental selenium (Se(0)) in selenized yeasts using HPLC-ICP-MS and single-particle ICP-MS. The study found Se(0) to represent 10-15% of total Se in the yeasts. While both methods were able to detect Se(0), reliable quantitative results were not obtained.

Characterisation of selenium and tellurium nanoparticles produced by Aureobasidium pullulans using a multi-method approach

Summary: The study recovered and characterized selenium (Se) and tellurium (Te) nanoparticles (NPs) using asymmetric flow field flow fractionation (AF4) coupled with various detectors. Different buffer solutions and flow rates were compared for optimal separation and recovery of NPs, with Novachem solution showing higher stability for elution. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of complementary techniques in characterizing biogenic Se and Te NPs.
