Co3O4 anchored on biochar derived from chitosan (Co3O4@BCC) as a catalyst to efficiently activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for degradation of phenacetin

Junpeng Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, chitosan was used as a biochar precursor to prepare cobalt-based catalyst Co3O4@BCC, which was able to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of phenacetin (PNT). The results showed that Co3O4@BCC had a higher degradation efficiency compared to Co3O4 alone, due to the dispersion of Co3O4 nanoparticles and the presence of electron-rich groups on the carrier. The composite also exhibited good universality and reusability. The study provides a feasible strategy for the design and fabrication of environmentally friendly and efficient catalysts for PMS activation to degrade organic pollutants.

Petal-like hierarchical Co3O4/N-doped porous carbon derived from Co-MOF for enhanced peroxymonosulfate activation to remove tetracycline hydrochloride

Qingqing Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel N-doped porous carbon catalyst with multiple active sites was successfully synthesized and showed excellent catalytic activity towards tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH). The catalytic performance of the catalyst, named Co3O4/NC, in the peroxymonosulfate system was significantly better than other catalysts. The removal efficiency of TCH reached 96.4% within 30 minutes, and remained above 97% over a wide pH range of 5-9, with 71% of total organic carbon (TOC) being eliminated. The EPR analysis indicated that the degradation of TCH was mainly attributed to the coexistence of SO4•- and O-2. The degradation pathways of TCH were elucidated based on theoretical calculation and HPLC-TOF-MS2 data.

Acceleration of levofloxacin degradation by combination of multiple free radicals via MoS2 anchored in manganese ferrite doped perovskite activated PMS under visible light

Yuxuan He et al.

Summary: The nanocomposite of MoS2 embedded manganese ferrite doped perovskite (SrCoO3/MnFe2O4/MoS2) was synthesized for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, showing excellent catalytic performance for levofloxacin (LVF) degradation. The rapid redox cycle of metal ions boosted the PMS activation and promoted the degradation of LVF. DFT calculation and LC-MS/MS analysis revealed the main degradation pathways of LVF. T.E.S.T verified the ecological risks of transformation residues.

Transformation of sulfamethoxazole by sulfidated nanoscale zerovalent iron activated persulfate: Mechanism and risk assessment using environmental metabolomics

Xiaolong Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the degradation mechanism of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) by sulfidated nanoscale zerovalent iron (S-nZVI) driven persulfate and the potential risk of intermediates. The results show that both SO4- and ·OH are involved in the degradation of SMX, with SO4- being the predominant free radical. XPS analysis reveals that reduced sulfide species promote the conversion of Fe (III) to Fe (II), resulting in a higher transformation rate of SMX. Six intermediates are generated during the degradation process, and their potential risk is assessed using E. coli as a model microorganism.
