Enhancement of the magnetic and mechanical properties by introducing element carbon for Ti-based alloy

Qianqian Zhu et al.

Summary: The study systematically investigated the structural stability, electronic, magnetic and mechanical properties of graphene/Ti compounds with different phases using first principles. The results show that the mechanical parameters of these compounds, such as bulk modulus B, shear modulus G and Young's modulus E, increase linearly with the increase of carbon concentration. The introduction of carbon also induces the transition from non-magnetic to magnetic in titanium alloys with different phases. These findings suggest that the introduction of carbon improves the tensile strength-toughness compatibility of Ti-based compounds, making them suitable for potential applications in marine engineering and aerospace industry.

Toxic gas molecules adsorbed on intrinsic and defective WS2: gas sensing and detection

Zhen Cui et al.

Summary: The magnetic and electronic behaviors of toxic gases (CO, NH3, NO, and NO2) adsorbed on intrinsic and defective WS2 were investigated using density functional theory. The adsorption energy of NO-VW/WS2 was lower than that of NO on intrinsic WS2, indicating the potential of VW/WS2 for NO capture. The band gap of defective WS2 was reduced by the adsorption of the toxic gases, and the type of band gap was changed by the introduction of a sulfur defect. Notably, the adsorption of NO2 (NO) transformed the band gap of intrinsic WS2 (VW/WS2) from direct to indirect, while the introduction of NO2 transformed the band gap of VS/WS2 from indirect to direct. Additionally, CO and NH3-VW/WS2 showed shorter recovery times compared to CO and NH3 on intrinsic WS2, making VW/WS2 an ideal reversible sensor for CO and NH3 detection. Overall, the adsorption of gas molecules and the presence of defects can modulate the magnetic and electronic properties of WS2, which is crucial for gas sensing and toxic gas detection.

Tuning electronic, magnetic and catalytic behaviors of biphenylene network by atomic doping

Kai Ren et al.

Summary: A new two-dimensional carbon allotrope named biphenylene has been synthesized, and its electronic properties and doping effects have been studied. The results show that biphenylene exhibits metallic nature with n-type Dirac cone, and magnetism can be induced by Fe, Cl, Cr, and Mn doping. Furthermore, atomic doping has been found to significantly improve the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance of biphenylene, with Fe doping showing great potential in HER catalysis.

Adsorption of metal atoms on MoSi2N4 monolayer: A first principles study

Zhen Cui et al.

Summary: The magnetic and electronic properties of metal atoms adsorbed on the MoSi2N4 monolayer were studied using density functional theory. The results showed that the behavior of the MoSi2N4 monolayer varied depending on the type of metal adsorbed. Charge transfer between the metal atoms and MoSi2N4 was observed. The adsorbed metal atoms on the MoSi2N4 system have the potential to be used in spintronic and vacuum electron emission nanodevices.

Summary: This study synthesized a new two-dimensional monolayer W8Se12 structure via in situ electron-beam irradiation and systematically studied the photoelectric properties of monolayer M8X12 materials. The results showed that W8Se12 monolayer has a desirable direct band gap and anisotropic optical absorption, and can undergo a direct-indirect-metal transition under strain.

Atomic Adsorption-Controlled Magnetic Properties of a Two- Dimensional (2D) Janus Monolayer

Kai Ren et al.

Summary: This study investigates the properties of Janus B2P6 monolayer as a nonmagnetic semiconductor and regulates its electronic and magnetic properties through atomic adsorption engineering. The results show that Pd, Pt, and Zn can preserve the original band gap of the material, while adsorption of Cr, Mn, Sb, Sc, and V can alter its magnetic characteristics. In particular, V adsorption leads to a dilute magnetic semiconductor behavior in the B2P6 monolayer, indicating its potential in spintronics and magnetic storage applications.

Intrinsic Defects in MoS2 Grown by Pulsed Laser Deposition: From Monolayers to Bilayers

Fabian Bertoldo et al.

Summary: Pulsed laser deposition is a powerful method for growing 2D transition-metal dichalcogenides, but defects in these materials remain largely unknown. Sulfur vacancies and MoS antisites are the predominant defects in 2D MoS2 grown by PLD. The atomic structure of monolayer MoS2 and the role of grain boundaries on the growth of bilayer MoS2 are detailed, with results showing various structural symmetries in bilayer MoS2 and experimental demonstrations of stacking orientation transitions.

Tunable electronic and magnetic properties of MoSi2N4 monolayer via vacancy defects, atomic adsorption and atomic doping

A. Bafekry et al.

Summary: The first synthesis of two-dimensional MoSi2N4 (MSN) monolayer with rich physical and chemical properties was achieved. Using spin-polarized density functional theory, the study investigated the impact of different types of point defects on the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of the MSN monolayer. The results showed that all defects studied decrease the band gap of the MSN monolayer, revealing unique electronic and magnetic properties for each type of defect.
