On the links between nature's values and language

Dylan Inglis et al.

Summary: Recent research focuses on understanding human-nature relations by exploring the concept of relational values. However, the influence of language on these values has not been adequately examined. This study investigates the impact of the Basque language ('Euskara') on people's relationships with mountain forests. Results indicate that Euskara plays a key role in cultural identity and place attachment, highlighting the importance of language in relational values. Positive rapports with language can be leveraged for local sustainability transitions, emphasizing the need for further research on the links between biological and linguistic diversity.

Broadening the scope of ecosystem services research: Disaggregation as a powerful concept for sustainable natural resource management

Maria Brueck et al.

Summary: Traditional aggregate assessments of ecosystem services cannot address equity issues effectively. This conceptual paper emphasizes the importance of disaggregation and proposes four dimensions for assessing equity implications in ecosystem services appropriation. It also presents a structured approach to conducting disaggregated assessments, which can provide crucial information for understanding the implications of changing natural resource management and ecosystem services appropriation.

Exploring Plural Values of Ecosystem Services: Local Peoples' Perceptions and Implications for Protected Area Management in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil

Marcondes G. Coelho-Junior et al.

Summary: The study examines the significance of the remnants of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil for biodiversity and their benefits for people in terms of ecosystem services. By analyzing the perceptions of people living in surrounding communities, the research aims to improve management models and address socio-environmental conflicts. Cultural and relational values play a key role in the valuation of the protected area, supporting the implementation of management strategies based on local values for sustainable land and forest use.

Socio-cultural analysis of ecosystem services provided by mangroves in La Encrucijada Biosphere Reserve, southeastern Mexico

Nadia Reyes-Arroyo et al.

Summary: Mangroves are vital ecosystems in coastal areas, providing important services for biodiversity and local communities. However, they are facing degradation due to human activities, leading to reduced provision of ecosystem services. Social and cultural valuation of these services can offer insights for conservation strategies. The main services valued by communities in La Encrucijada Biosphere Reserve are protection against natural disasters, fisheries, and climate regulation, while degradation factors include deforestation, river channeling, and pollution. The information gathered can be useful for policymakers to ensure access to environmental resources and sustainable livelihoods.

Disentangling ecosystem services preferences and values

Marleen S. Schutter et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between ecosystem services preferences and values, revealing a disconnection between the two. Exploring people's reasons for prioritising ecosystem services can improve understanding of underlying values, contribute to reconciling conflicts, and clarify impacts on communities.

The Unexplored Socio-Cultural Benefits of Coffee Plants: Implications for the Sustainable Management of Ethiopia's Coffee Forests

Bikila Jabessa Bulitta et al.

Summary: Coffee, as a commodity crop, has broader socio-cultural services beyond its commercial value, such as food and drink, religious and heritage functions. Integrating these services into the benefits of coffee systems could enhance the management of Ethiopian coffee forests.
