Redox Mediators in Homogeneous Co-electrocatalysis

Amelia G. Reid et al.

Summary: Homogeneous electrocatalysis has been extensively studied for the conversion of small molecules to useful products for green energy applications or as chemical feedstocks. However, their industrial application is hindered by the need for improved activity and stability. Inspired by naturally occurring enzymes, co-electrocatalytic systems with homogeneous catalysts and redox mediators (RMs) have been developed to enhance catalytic performance. RMs have been shown to increase catalyst activity and control selectivity, but additional advancements are needed for this approach to become more widely applicable.

Oxygen Evolution/Reduction Reaction Catalysts: From In Situ Monitoring and Reaction Mechanisms to Rational Design

Yonggui Zhao et al.

Summary: The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are critical steps in energy conversion and storage systems, but their slow kinetics and the complexity of catalyst-electrolyte interfaces limit their practical applications. Recent advances in in situ/operando characterization techniques have enabled the monitoring of catalysts under reaction conditions, providing valuable insights into the mechanistic studies of OER/ORR catalysts. This review highlights the determination of active species, identification of active sites, and monitoring of reactive intermediates, and discusses strategies for rational catalyst design.

Seeing the cis-Dihydroxylating Intermediate: A Mononuclear Nonheme Iron-Peroxo Complex in cis-Dihydroxylation Reactions Modeling Rieske Dioxygenases

Wenjuan Zhu et al.

Summary: The nature of reactive intermediates and the cis-dihydroxylation mechanism of arenes and olefins have been studied extensively in the past few decades. In this study, the reaction between a spectroscopically characterized mononuclear nonheme iron(III)-peroxo complex and olefins and naphthalene derivatives has been investigated. The results show that the nonheme iron(III)-peroxo complex is a nucleophile and reacts with olefins and naphthalenes to yield cis-diol products. This study presents the first example of cis-dihydroxylation of substrates by a nonheme iron(III)-peroxo complex.

Metalloporphyrins as Catalytic Models for Studying Hydrogen and Oxygen Evolution and Oxygen Reduction Reactions

Xialiang Li et al.

Summary: This Account describes recent investigations on catalytic HER, OER, and ORR with metalloporphyrins and derivatives. The authors focus on exploring metalloporphyrins to study reaction mechanisms and structure-function relationships. They provide insights into H-H and O-O bond formation/cleavage mechanisms in HER, identify Mn-based nucleophilic attack mechanism for O-O bond formation in OER, and propose strategies to enhance activity and selectivity in ORR. The authors also developed strategies to graft metalloporphyrins on various electrode materials for improved electrocatalytic performance. This information is valuable for the development of porphyrin-based catalysts and other molecular and material catalysts for small molecule activation reactions.

A trinuclear cobalt complex, a new electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction to H2O2

Jie-Jie Tan et al.

Summary: A new trinuclear cobalt complex has been synthesized and characterized using physical-chemical and spectroscopic methods. Electrochemical investigations demonstrate that this cobalt complex can act as an electro-catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction, yielding a high percentage of H2O2. It is proposed that the dissociation of the CH3O- group from the cobalt complex creates vacant positions on the cobalt centers, facilitating the binding of O2 for the formation of H2O2 or H2O.

Co(II) Complex with a Covalently Attached Pendent Quinol Selectively Reduces O2 to H2O

Segun V. Obisesan et al.

Summary: A Co(II) complex with the polydentate quinol-containing ligand H2qp1 acts as an efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction. It selectively produces H2O without any additional electron-proton transfer mediators, whereas a related complex that substitutes a phenol for the quinol instead produces mostly H2O2 under the same conditions.

Peroxide-Selective Reduction of O2 at Redox-Inactive Rare-Earth(III) Triflates Generates an Ambiphilic Peroxide

Matthew J. Lueckheide et al.

Summary: Metal peroxides play important roles in biological and synthetic processes. In this study, a rare-earth peroxide was selectively reduced using a mild metallocene reductant. The isolated peroxide displayed high thermal stability and engaged in both electrophilic and nucleophilic reactions. The study revealed that the rate of oxygen reduction is determined by metal-ion accessibility rather than Lewis acidity.

Enzyme-Inspired Iron Porphyrins for Improved Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reduction and Evolution Reactions

Lisi Xie et al.

Summary: An enzyme-inspired Fe porphyrin 1 has been found to be an efficient catalyst for both ORR and OER, outperforming its imidazole-free analogue 2. Experimental results suggest that 1 can prevent the formation of less effective trans HO-Fe-V=O, thereby improving the efficiency of O-O bond formation.

Catalytic Reduction of Dioxygen to Water by a Bioinspired Non-Heme Iron Complex via a 2+2 Mechanism

Emma N. Cook et al.

Summary: This study presents a bioinspired non-heme Fe complex with a tripodal [N3O](-) ligand framework that shows electrocatalytic activity towards dioxygen reduction using acetic acid as a proton source. The complex selectively produces water via a 2+2 mechanism, with H2O2 generated as an intermediate species, and spectroscopic analysis reveals the formation of an Fe(III)-hydroxide species following exposure to H2O2. The ligand's carboxylate moiety is shown to be sensitive to hydrogen-bonding interactions with the acetic acid proton donor during reduction, providing insight into the distribution of charge and proton donors in mononuclear non-heme Fe active sites during reactions with dioxygen.

Pendent Relay Enhances H2O2 Selectivity during Dioxygen Reduction Mediated by Bipyridine-Based Co-N2O2 Complexes

Asa W. Nichols et al.

Summary: The selectivity of cobalt-N2O2 complexes during oxygen reduction can be modified by adjusting the ligand structure, potentially due to the influence of protonation steps. In the presence of strong acids, complexes with -pendent groups will undergo Co(III)-superoxide protonation as the rate-determining step, leading to predominantly H2O2 production.

Reduction of dioxygen to water by a Co(N2O2) complex with a 2,2′-bipyridine backbone

Asa W. Nichols et al.

Summary: In this study, a Co-based complex was utilized for the reduction of O2 to H2O, showing selectivity for the four-electron/four-proton reduction product. The key selectivity difference was found to arise from increased favorability of protonation at the distal O position of the key intermediate Co(III)-hydroperoxide. Interestingly, no product selectivity dependence was observed with respect to the presence of pyridine during catalysis.
