Persistent high blood pressure and renal dysfunction in preterm infants during childhood

Jessica Wickland et al.

Summary: Infants born very preterm and with very-low birth weight often exhibit high blood pressure, renal dysfunction, and obesity. This study aimed to determine the progression of these conditions during childhood. The results showed that PT-VLBW infants at 1-3 years and at 10-13 years still had obesity, elevated blood pressure, and low glomerular filtration rate. It is important for pediatricians to conduct regular evaluations throughout childhood for children born very preterm.

Double-blinded randomized controlled trial of optimizing nutrition in preterm very low birth weight infants: Bayley scores at 18-38 months of age

Jordan D. Reis et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the effects of individualized+optimized nutrition and optimized nutrition alone on Bayley scores in preterm infants. The results showed that the type of human milk supplementation provided had no significant effect on Bayley scores at 18-38 months.

Assessment of metabolic syndrome predictors in relation to inflammation and visceral fat tissue in older adults

Anna Tylutka et al.

Summary: The diagnosis of metabolic syndrome (MetS) focuses on assessing risk factors and markers of systemic inflammation may also be included in its definition. This study evaluates low-grade inflammation in older adults with MetS and attempts to identify new predictors through ROC Curve analysis. Participants were divided into two groups based on MetS criteria, and their health status was assessed using medical records.

Growth trajectory during the first 1000 days and later overweight in very preterm infants

Laure Simon et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between early life growth and later overweight or obesity. The study found that birth weight, increase in weight during neonatal hospital stay, and increase in BMI between discharge and 2 years of age were positively associated with overweight or obesity at 15 years, while increase in length during neonatal hospital stay was negatively associated. These associations were also confirmed at 5 years, suggesting that BMI at 2 years was already related to later overweight or obesity in very preterm born children.

Cardiovascular Morbidities in Adults Born Preterm: Getting to the Heart of the Matter!

Vasantha H. S. Kumar

Summary: Advances in perinatal and neonatal care have improved the survival of preterm infants into adulthood, but they face higher risks of cardiometabolic disorders. The interconnected nature of the cardio-pulmonary system highlights the importance of addressing these issues holistically to improve the quality of life for adults born preterm.
