Sustainable and high-performance composites based on glycidyl methacrylate-grafted poly(lactic acid) and cellulose nanofibrils

Seok-Ju Kim et al.

Summary: In this study, sustainable composites based on modified poly(lactic acid) (PLA) matrix and cellulose nanofibril (CNF) fillers were investigated regarding their microstructure, thermal stability, melt-rheological behavior, and mechanical properties. The results showed successful grafting of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) onto the PLA backbone and the existence of intermolecular chemical reactions and specific interactions between the GMA group of the PLA-g-GMA matrix and the hydroxyl group of the CNF filler in the composites. The increase in CNF loading resulted in higher glass transition and cold-crystallization temperatures, as well as improved thermal decomposition temperature and residue at 500°C, elastic storage moduli, impact strength, and complex viscosity.

Development of hesperetin methacrylates and their high performance thermosets

Anthony M. Clay et al.

Summary: In this study, hesperetin-based monomers with various degrees of methacrylate functionality were synthesized, including trimethacrylate, dimethacrylate, and monomethacrylated hesperetin monomers. Resins with reactive diluents 4-acryloylmorpholine and styrene were formulated, which exhibited Newtonian fluid behavior with viscosities below 800 cP. The hesperetin-based thermosets showed improved properties, such as higher glass transition temperature, ultimate strength, and tensile modulus compared to bisphenol A dimethacrylate. However, the properties of the thermosets were lower than expected based on Bicerano model predictions, and microcrack formation and unique morphologies were observed due to poor copolymerization behavior and excessive crosslinking.

Preparation of polyaniline-poly(ethylene-vinyl acetate) film: Resistivity in the ESD range

Susmitha Uppugalla et al.

Summary: Films of PANI salt/EVA were prepared by solution processing technique for ESD application. The PANI salt was dispersed in xylene solvent, while EVA was dissolved in the same solvent. The resulting films were evaluated for their tensile strength, elongation at break, and surface resistivity. The morphology of the PANI-MSA/EVA films was studied through FE-SEM, and their thermal behaviors were analyzed by TGA. The surface resistivity of the EVA-PANI films ranged from 10(4)-10(8) O sq(-1), making them suitable for ESD application.

Self-Compositing: A Efficient Method of Improving the Electrical Conductivity of Graphene Nanoplatelet/Thermosetting Resin Composites

Xiaowen Qiu et al.

Summary: A new self-compositing strategy is developed in this paper to improve the conductivity of graphene nanoplatelet/thermosetting resin composites. The strategy involves crushing the conventional composite into micron-sized powders, which are then mixed with graphene nanoplatelets to form complex fillers. This self-compositing method enhances the electrical conductivity by creating a highly conductive network inside the composite material. It is a promising and general approach for enhancing the conductivity of thermosetting resin matrix composites.

Fractal characterization of polyester based standard and single walled carbon nanotube modified composites

Aykut Ilgaz et al.

Summary: This study presents a comparative analysis of alternating current (ac) conductivity and fractal structure characteristics in standard and single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) reinforced polymer composites. The conductivity of nanotube doped material was found to be frequency-independent in the low frequency region, and obeyed Jonscher's power law in the high frequency region. The addition of carbon nanotubes increased the coverage ratio and fractal dimension, while decreasing the interface critical exponent.

Room Temperature Synthesized TiO2 Nanoparticles for Two-Folds Enhanced Mechanical Properties of Unsaturated Polyester

Muhammad Shoaib et al.

Summary: The use of nano-inclusion to strengthen polymeric materials has the potential to achieve high specific strength. However, the commercial application of such nano-composites is limited due to high cost and unwanted aggregation of nanoparticles. In this study, a scalable and economical synthesis method for TiO2 nanoparticles, without surfactants, was proposed. The synthesized nanoparticles showed self-dispersed behavior and enabled the production of gram-scale quantities. The incorporation of these nanoparticles into unsaturated polyester resin resulted in a composite with significantly improved mechanical properties, attributed to strong interface and superior dispersion of nanoparticles.

Aramid nanofiber-reinforced thermotropic polyarylate nanocomposites with improved thermal and long-term mechanical performance

Tae-Gyeong Eom et al.

Summary: In this study, the influences of aramid nanofiber (ANF) on the thermal stability and long-term mechanical performance of thermotropic polyarylate (TPAR) nanocomposites were investigated. It was found that ANFs contributed to enhancing the glass transition temperature and melt-crystallization of TPAR, thereby improving the overall mechanical durability of the nanocomposites.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes encapsulated by graphitic carbon nitride with simultaneously co-doping of B and P and ammonium polyphosphate to improve flame retardancy of unsaturated polyester resins

Zhongwei Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) encrusted multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) co-doped with B and P were synthesized by a one-pot hydrothermal method and used with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) to improve the fire safety of unsaturated polyester resins (UPR). The results showed that BPCNT and APP conferred excellent fire safety properties to UPR composites, significantly increasing flexural strength, toughness, and the limited oxygen index, while reducing total heat release, total smoke production, and CO2 yield.

Review on intrinsically recyclable flame retardant thermosets enabled through covalent bonds

Muhammad Abdur Rashid et al.

Summary: Developing thermosets with inherent recyclability and flame retardancy is crucial for fire safety, resource conservation, and environmental protection. However, the current recyclable thermosetting materials have significant flammability, limiting their applications. Therefore, incorporating flame retardants is necessary to improve their safety. This review paper aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of inherently recyclable flame retardant thermosets by discussing recent advances and future prospects.

Soo-Yeon Kim et al.

Summary: This study reports the electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and electrothermal properties of MXene-coated cellulose hybrid papers (MCPs) and fabrics (MCFs) with high flexibility and low density, manufactured by a dip-dry coating approach. The results show that high electrical conductivity and excellent EMI shielding effectiveness are achieved by multiple dip-dry coating cycles on cellulose papers and fabrics. Additionally, even one-time dip-dry coating cycle samples demonstrate outstanding electrothermal performance at low applied voltages.
