How temporal environmental stochasticity affects species richness: Destabilization, neutralization and the storage effect

Jayant Pande et al.

Summary: Temporal environmental stochasticity (TES) has diverse effects on species richness in communities, including destabilizing, neutralizing, and facilitating effects. The stabilizing effect of the storage mechanism is diminished in diverse communities, and it can counteract the destabilizing effect of TES only when environmental fluctuations are rapid enough.

Asymptotic Absorption-Time Distributions in Extinction-Prone Markov Processes

David Hathcock et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the absorption-time distributions for birth-death Markov chains with an absorbing boundary. For extinction-prone chains, the asymptotic distribution can be Gaussian, Gumbel, or belongs to a family of skewed distributions. The latter two cases occur when the dynamics slow down significantly near the boundary. The study establishes new results for the absorption-time distribution in various areas such as evolution, epidemics, and chemical reactions. Applications to African sleeping sickness are also discussed.

Quantifying invasibility

Jayant Pande et al.

Summary: Invasibility, the chance of a population to grow from rarity and become established, is fundamental in population genetics, ecology, epidemiology, and evolution. The traditional invasion criterion, mean growth rate when a species is rare, has been found to be an unreliable quantitative metric for invasibility. This paper presents two novel formulas, based on diffusion approximation and large-deviations approach, for estimating invasion probability given the mean growth rate and its variance.
