Pheochromocytoma recurrence in hereditary disease: does a cortical-sparing technique increase recurrence rate?

Aditya S. Shirali et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of posterior retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy on the recurrence of hereditary pheochromocytoma and evaluate the predictors of recurrence. The results showed that the introduction of posterior retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy did not affect the recurrence rate of hereditary pheochromocytoma patients. RET M918T mutation was identified as an independent factor associated with increased recurrence risk.

New Insights on the Genetics of Pheochromocytoma and Paraganglioma and Its Clinical Implications

Sakshi Jhawar et al.

Summary: Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas are rare neuroendocrine tumors, and approximately 40% of cases are associated with genetic mutations. These mutations can influence the clinical presentation, prognosis, and follow-up of patients. Genetic testing allows for early detection of hereditary syndromes and close monitoring of high-risk patients.

Clinical and Pathological Tools for Predicting Recurrence and/or Metastasis in Patients with Pheochromocytoma and Paraganglioma

Chiara Bima et al.

Summary: Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas are endocrine tumors with unpredictable clinical courses and risks of relapse and metastasis. There is currently no reliable method to predict their metastatic potential. This review compares predictive models and emphasizes the importance of simple and validated tools for defining disease aggressiveness and tailoring treatment plans for individual patients.

Long-term follow-up of patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery for phaeochromocytoma

Patrick J. O'Dwyer et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the long-term oncological outcomes of laparoscopic surgery for patients with phaeochromocytoma are at least equivalent to that of open surgery. The study conducted a follow-up on a consecutive series of patients and found low recurrence rate, no local recurrence, and high long-term disease-free survival rate with laparoscopic surgery.

Laparoscopic partial adrenalectomy using near-infrared imaging: the initial experience

Altug Tuncel et al.

Summary: In this study, we found that laparoscopic partial adrenalectomy using indocyanine green dye with near-infrared fluorescence imaging is safe and feasible. This technology enhances identification of vascular structures during surgery, assisting in more precise resection of lesions.

Genetics of pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma

Heather Wachtel et al.

Summary: Germline pathogenic variants are found in up to 40% of patients with PCC/PGL, categorized into pseudohypoxia and kinase signaling clusters; somatic driver mutations exist in some of the same genes along with additional genes, understanding the molecular pathogenesis of PCC/PGL is crucial for advancements in diagnosis, surveillance, and novel therapies.
