Jinglin Zhu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the use of macroporous polystyrene resin as a support to improve the stability of nanosized spinel cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) during peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for decontamination in water. The supported CoFe2O4 nanoparticles exhibit high catalytic activity and low cobalt leaching. The findings also reveal the stability of the organic resin during the non-radical process and evaluate the catalytic durability and stability of CoFe2O4 in actual wastewater.

Confined and mediated intercalation of nanoparticles in graphene oxide membrane to fine-tune desalination performance

Siyu Zhou et al.

Summary: Multilayered graphene oxide (GO) membranes with nanoporous interlayer have limitations in water desalination due to their tortuous transport pathways and water-swelling characteristics. This study develops a confined interlayer with mediated nanoparticle intercalation to enhance water transport and ion retardation in GO membranes. The roles of confinement and mediation in the intercalation modification of GO laminates are investigated, highlighting their indispensability in achieving efficient desalination processes. This strategy may also be applicable to fine-structure control of other two-dimensional laminates.

Impact of effluent organic matter on perfluoroalkyl acid removal from wastewater effluent by granular activated carbon and alternative adsorbents

Bahareh Tajdini et al.

Summary: The occurrence of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in wastewater effluent has led to a greater need for effective sorption-based PFAA treatment methods. This study investigated the impact of ozone (O3)-biologically active filtration (BAF) as pretreatment options for nonselective and selective adsorbents. The results showed that O3-BAF in tandem achieved the highest PFAA removal performance improvement. Additionally, the transformation of hydrophobic effluent organic matter (EfOM) to hydrophilic molecules during O3 and biotransformation of EfOM during BAF were the main mechanisms responsible for improving PFAA removal.

Boron continuous recovery from brines by the multicolumn simulated moving bed process with boron chelating resin

Liqiang Shao et al.

Summary: The objective of this work is to develop an advanced adsorption process to continuously recover and remove boron from brines. The adsorption and desorption performances of boron on the D403 resin were evaluated, and a cyclic adsorption and desorption process was investigated experimentally for boron recovery. A seven-column SMB process with four zones was designed and experimentally investigated, and it was found that boron can be recovered continuously from brine and a boron-rich solution can be obtained. The proposed multicolumn SMB process achieved simultaneous recovery and removal of boron from brine.

Renjie Chen et al.

Summary: The study developed tannic acid (TA)-aided hydrothermal treatment (HT) to address the formation of refractory compounds and high nitrogen concentrations during sludge deep dewatering. The addition of TA improved sludge dewaterability and reduced the optimal HT temperature. By destroying protein structure and producing more hydrophobic binding sites for TA, TA-aided HT enhanced protein precipitation and sludge dewaterability.

Catalytic aerobic oxidation of P(I)/P(III) into P(V) over PdNi10 as a low-cost alternative catalyst rivaling Pd

Huan Su et al.

Summary: Chemical oxidation is essential in treating P(I)/P(III)-bearing wastewater. A low-cost catalyst, PdNi10, was developed as an alternative to the noble metal Pd for the chemical-free oxidation of P(I)/P(III) into P(V) by ambient O-2. PdNi10 demonstrated superior catalytic activity and wide applicability in the conversion of P(I) into P(V) under various pH conditions. The oxidation reactions were confirmed to be non-radical pathways, and the involvement of Ni components was found to be negligible. The reactive oxidant species for P(I)/P(III) oxidation were identified as interfacial OH groups resulting from H2O dissociation.
