A Malleable Composite Dough with Well- Dispersed and High-Content Boron Nitride Nanosheets

Lanshu Xu et al.

Summary: Aggregation of 2D nanosheet fillers in high loading polymer matrix limits composite performance improvement. A mechanical interlocking strategy is developed to incorporate high filling content (up to 20 wt %) boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) into a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) matrix, resulting in a malleable and reusable BNNS/PTFE composite dough. The well-dispersed BNNS fillers can be rearranged into a highly oriented direction, leading to a composite film with significantly improved thermal conductivity, low dielectric constant/loss, and excellent mechanical properties.

Ultra-high dielectric constant and thermal conductivity SrTiO3@VTMS/PB composite for microwave substrate application

Zhengyi Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) treated SrTiO3 particles were composited with polybutadiene (PB) to create a promising composite for microwave applications. The effects of SrTiO3 doping on microstructure and dielectric properties were investigated in detail, and the thermal and mechanical properties of the composite were also analyzed. The xSrTiO(3)@VTMS/PB composite with 87.5 wt% SrTiO3 content exhibited the best dielectric properties, including a high dielectric constant (epsilon(r) = 21.1) and low dielectric loss (tan delta similar to 4.1 x 10(-3)) at 10 GHz.

High microwave dielectric constant and improved thermal stability of functionalized Zn0.15Nb0.3Ti0.55O2-filled polyolefin composites

Zhengyi Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the structure, microwave dielectric properties, and thermal properties of xZn(0.15)Nb(0.3)Ti(0.55)O(2) @VTMS/polyolefin composites in the range of x = 83-91 wt%. The results showed that a core-shell structure was formed to enhance the compatibility between ceramic particles and polyolefin matrix. The modified ceramic formed an interfacial layer with the resin matrix, improving the thermal stability of the composites. At x = 89 wt%, a high-D-k composite with promising microwave application potential was obtained.

Revisiting the adhesion mechanism of mussel-inspired chemistry

Chao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study reveals a previously unexplored adhesion mechanism in mussel-inspired chemistry, where 5,6-dihydroxyindole (DHI) moieties play a crucial role, challenging the conventional belief of catechol-dominated adhesion. The high adhesion strength of polydopamine (PDA) is attributed to the abundant yield of DHI moieties achieved through oxidation and cyclization during self-polymerization, suggesting that substituent chemistry and self-polymerization can govern adhesion in mussel-inspired materials.

Insight into the effect of OH modification on the piezo-photocatalytic hydrogen production activity of SrTiO3

Yuying Jiang et al.

Summary: Surface modification with hydrophilic functional group greatly enhances the catalytic performance of SrTiO3 in photocatalysis, piezocatalysis, and piezo-photocatalysis for hydrogen production. The OH-modified SrTiO3 showed about two times higher hydrogen generation compared to pristine SrTiO3 due to its super hydrophilicity and increased oxygen vacancies. The optimal piezo-photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of OH-modified SrTiO3 was 5.3 times higher than the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution process of SrTiO3. This study presents a low-energy approach for the rational design of functional group modification nanomaterials with excellent piezo-photocatalytic performance.

Enhanced thermal conductivity and stability of boron nitride/phenyl silicone rubber composites via surface modification and grain alignment

Mingming Sheng et al.

Summary: This study successfully prepared polymer-based thermal insulation composites with excellent thermal conductivity and stability by modifying the boron nitride filler and applying pressure during processing. The modified boron nitride filler improved the thermal conductivity of the composites by enhancing its interface compatibility with the polymer matrix. Additionally, aligning the filler grains in the direction of heat flow by applying pressure further enhanced the through-plane thermal conductivity of the composites.

Novel Al2Mo3O12-PTFE composites for microwave dielectric substrates

Junqing Ren et al.

Summary: Novel PTFE-based composites with different contents of Al2Mo3O12 modified by the coupling agent F8261 were successfully prepared, showing improved densification and dielectric properties. The addition of modified Al2Mo3O12 powders increased the εr value while tan delta remained relatively constant. Among the composites, those with 30 wt% Al2Mo3O12 demonstrated the optimal dielectric properties. These results suggest that the 30 wt% Al2Mo3O12 - 70 wt% PTFE composite could be a promising candidate for high-performance microwave dielectric substrates.

One-step alkyl-modification on boron nitride nanosheets for polypropylene nanocomposites with enhanced thermal conductivity and ultra-low dielectric loss

Zilong Xie et al.

Summary: This study presents a low-loading polypropylene nanocomposites with uniformly-dispersed and interfacial engineered boron nitride nanosheets, which exhibit significantly enhanced thermal conductivity of 2.74 W/m.K and remarkably low dielectric loss of only 0.002. The strong interfacial noncovalent interactions between BNNS and macromolecular chain suppress the interfacial polarization, while the well-maintained hexagonal crystalline lattice of BNNS promises efficient phonon transmission. These thermal and dielectric performances outperform most previously reported thermoconductive polymer-based dielectrics, and the material also offers excellent electric breakdown strength, flexibility, and stretchability, providing a promising avenue for fabricating thermo-conductive dielectrics with low dielectric loss.
