Behrooz Jadidi et al.

Summary: Discrete element method (DEM) and statistical analysis were used to analyze the flow patterns and mixing mechanisms of a double paddle blender. The study found that impeller speed and initial loading pattern had significant effects on the mixing performance, and diffusion was identified as the dominant mixing mechanism in the blender.

Evaluation of the significance of the contact model particle parameters in the modelling of wet soils by the discrete element method

Salavat Mudarisov et al.

Summary: Modeling the tillage process using the method of discrete elements shows promise in accurately describing soil behavior, although calibration of the contact model parameters can be time-consuming. The results of calibration help in understanding the significance of these parameters and can lead to nomograms for selecting appropriate parameters based on soil conditions.

DEM simulations and experiments investigating of grain tank discharge of a rice combine harvester

Zheng Ma et al.

Summary: This study uses a discrete element method to simulate the movement of rice during the discharge process of a grain tank in a combine harvester. The flow type, wall pressure, particle velocity, discharge time, and mass flow rate are analyzed and compared to experimental results. The simulation shows similarities to the experiment and provides insights for the design and improvement of grain tanks.

Development and validation of a DEM model for predicting impact damage of maize kernels

Zhengpu Chen et al.

Summary: A discrete element method (DEM) simulation was developed to predict the impact damage of maize kernels. The DEM model used a three-parameter Weibull distribution to describe the damage probability, which showed good predictions of kernel damage fraction. Sensitivity analysis revealed the significant effects of damage resistance parameters, coefficients of restitution, and particle shape representation on damage fraction. The simulation collected contact-level statistics and predicted the locations of damage occurrence. The DEM damage model is useful for guiding grain handling processes to minimize kernel damage and improve grain quality.

DEM simulation for draft force prediction of moldboard plow according to the tillage depth in cohesive soil

Yeon-Soo Kim et al.

Summary: This study focuses on agricultural soil modeling and prediction of draft force in function of tillage depth using DEM simulation, compared with field test results for accuracy verification. The DEM simulation showed a prediction accuracy within 7.5% compared to measured draft force, outperforming existing theoretical methods. Including soil properties of different soil layers in the DEM soil model can improve prediction accuracy by 20.3% compared to considering only topsoil properties.

Investigation on JKR surface energy of high-humidity maize grains

Xin Feng et al.

Summary: A model for calculating the JKR surface energy between high-humidity maize grains was developed in this study, with various factors affecting the surface energy investigated. Results indicated that the surface energy of grains increased with higher moisture content and temperature, with crude starch content being the main influencing factor. The study also compared the simulation results with physical tests and provided reference data for calculating JKR surface energy of other high-moisture particles.
