Coherent Flow Structures Near Tongue Region in a Centrifugal Fan With Forward-Curved Blades

Shaofei Wang et al.

Summary: The unsteady characteristics of the velocity field around the tongue of the volute in a centrifugal fan with forward-curved blades were investigated using time-resolved particle image velocimetry and mode decomposition analysis. Different types of unsteadiness in the flow field were revealed, including large-scale fluctuations at rotation frequency and its high-order harmonics, jet-wake structures at blade passing frequency, and strip-like velocity structures at intermediate frequency. The geometric and dynamic features of these coherent flow structures were examined using eigenfunction and reduced-order reconstruction, and their impact on wall-pressure fluctuation on the nose of the tongue was discussed.

Particle image velocimetry in a centrifugal pump: Details of the fluid flow at different operation conditions

Rodolfo M. Perissinotto et al.

Summary: This paper aims to characterize single-phase water flows in a centrifugal pump and improve our understanding of the relationship between flow behavior and pump performance. Through experimental investigations using particle image velocimetry (PIV), the flow characteristics of different operating conditions were determined. The results show that the flow morphology depends on the rotational speed of the impeller and water flow rate, with significant changes in velocity fluctuations and energy losses at off-design conditions.

Investigations of energy distribution and loss characterization in a centrifugal impeller through PIV experiment

Bo Chen et al.

Summary: The objective of this study is to explore a method that can directly describe the loss distribution trend of flow field through the PIV experiment. Three main concepts, namely Local pressure head increase (H-pr), Local velocity head increase (H-vr) and Local pump degree of reaction (lambda), are proposed to characterize the energy distribution in the impeller. Results show that the distribution of energy losses is mainly affected by the inlet flow field of the impeller passage, and the local increase of absolute velocity caused by vortex motion further influences the distribution of energy losses.

Investigation of the mechanism of unsteady flow induced by cavitation at the tongue of a centrifugal pump based on the proper orthogonal decomposition method

Jiaxing Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the occurrence and development of cavitation at the tongue and its impact on the flow field in a centrifugal pump. Numerical calculations and experimental verification are conducted, and the results show that the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method accurately captures the coherent structures caused by cavitation and the unstable flow structures due to vortex shedding. The relationship between the pressure pulsation frequency and the flow field structure is established.

Experimental investigation of relative velocity field based on image rotation method in pump impeller

Xiao-Dong Liu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a high frequency PIV system for measuring continuous flow field in impeller, along with an image rotation method to calculate relative velocity flow field with the aim of reducing the minimum sampling frequency required for PIV. Experimental results demonstrate that the image rotation method can achieve a more accurate velocity field near the blade area and has a lower requirement for the sampling frequency of the PIV system.

Experimental study on flow structures of central blockage accidents in a rectangular channel using PIV and POD

Dongdong Yuan et al.

Summary: The central blockage accidents of a rectangular channel with a high aspect ratio were investigated using PIV and POD. It was found that two counter-rotating vortices were formed in the wake after blocking, and the shedding of vortices was suppressed for a higher blockage ratio. The influence of obstructions on flow structures was highlighted by POD modes, and the generation and evolution of vortices were convincingly demonstrated through further phase-averaged analysis.

Flow visualization in centrifugal pumps: A review of methods and experimental studies

Rodolfo Marcilli Perissinotto et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the historical significance of flow visualization methods in fluid mechanics and the recent technological advances that have improved experimental techniques in studying centrifugal pumps. The study highlights the importance of visualization for understanding the behavior of single-phase and two-phase flows in pumps and for optimizing the performance of Electrical Submersible Pumps. The paper also emphasizes the complexity and necessity of visualization studies on liquid-liquid mixtures in pumps.

Unsteady flow characteristics in centrifugal pump based on proper orthogonal decomposition method

Zhengchuan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study has established a hybrid Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes/large eddy simulations method based on the von Karman scale and the correction of the rotation curvature to investigate the complex flow characteristics and energy distribution of flow structures in a centrifugal pump. The results show that factors such as flow separation and pressure fluctuations can affect the hydraulic performance of the centrifugal pump.
