The efficient degradation of diclofenac by ferrate and peroxymonosulfate: performances, mechanisms, and toxicity assessment

Haonan He et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the degradation efficiency and reaction mechanisms of diclofenac by the combination of ferrate and peroxymonosulfate. The results showed that the Fe(VI)/PMS system had a higher degradation efficiency for diclofenac compared to other treatment processes. The study confirmed the involvement of sulfate radicals, hydroxyl radicals, and different forms of iron in the degradation of diclofenac. The identification of degradation byproducts and assessment of toxicity variations were also conducted. Overall, this study provides a theoretical basis for the utilization of the Fe(VI)/PMS process.

Performances and mechanisms of ferrate(VI) oxidation process for shale gas flowback water treatment

Wenshi Liu et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to find effective and environmentally friendly methods for removing organic matter from shale gas flowback water (SGFW). Fe(VI) was found to remove 57% of the chemical oxygen demand (COD) under optimal conditions. Hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) were identified as the main reactive species responsible for oxidation.

Efficient removal of organic contaminants in real shale gas flowback water using Fenton oxidation assisted by UV irradiation: Feasibility study and process optimization

Wenshi Liu et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to identify an effective method for removing organic pollutants from real shale gas flowback water. The UV-Fenton process demonstrated better performance in treating shale gas flowback water, achieving a TOC removal efficiency as high as 70.02% under optimal experimental conditions. The acceleration of the Fe3+ to Fe2+ cycle in the UV-Fenton process led to higher TOC removal efficiency and mineralization of most organic pollutants.

Insights on free radical oxidation and in-situ coagulation in PMS/Fe(II) process for the removal of algogenic organic matter precursors

Lap-Cuong Hua et al.

Summary: This study examines a novel hybrid oxidation-coagulation PMS/Fe(II) process for effective removal of algogenic organic matter (AOM)-derived disinfection byproduct (DBP) precursors. The results show that under neutral pH conditions, PMS/Fe(II) is able to significantly remove dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and AOM-fluorescent components, as well as effectively degrade AOM-derived DBPs. This research fills the knowledge gap in the study of PMS/Fe(II) and highlights its potential as an alternative for sustainable water treatment.

Storage strategy for shale gas flowback water based on non-bactericide microorganism control

Aqiang Ding et al.

Summary: A storage strategy was designed in this study to reduce the amount and activity of microorganisms in flowback water without the addition of biocides, promoting the green exploitation of shale gas. Dissolved oxygen was found to contribute significantly to microbial control effectiveness, with temperature not showing significant impact. Identified thermophilic, anaerobic, sulfate reduction, and metal corrosion microorganisms were effectively reduced by different storage strategies.

Facile preparation of antifouling nanofiltration membrane by grafting zwitterions for reuse of shale gas wastewater

Minli Hu et al.

Summary: This study successfully achieved anti-fouling property against organic foulants by grafting poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) onto the surface of a nanofiltration membrane. The PSBMA-grafted NF membrane showed high performance in treating shale gas wastewater, including improved flux stability, increased removal of protein-like and humus-like organic matters. The study suggests that the proposed anti-fouling zwitterionic membranes have potential for industrial applications in the on-site reuse of SGW.

Organics removal from shale gas wastewater by pre-oxidation combined with biologically active filtration

Peng Tang et al.

Summary: Biological treatment technology is being increasingly explored for shale gas wastewater (SGW) treatment due to its cost effectiveness. Ozone and ferrate(VI) oxidation pre-treatment can enhance the performance of biologically active filtration (BAF) by improving organic contaminants removal efficiency under high salinity conditions. Uncultured bacterial species in the O-3-BAF and Fe(VI)-BAF systems play a significant role in organic removal, but more research is needed to understand their specific functions.

Advanced oxidation processes in the removal of organic substances from produced water: Potential, configurations, and research needs

Marco Coha et al.

Summary: Produced water is the main by-product of fossil fuel extraction activities, which requires adequate treatment to purify its quality for recycling or discharge. Advanced oxidation processes are increasingly studied for the removal of organic pollutants in produced water, including various methods such as Fenton-based oxidation. Different oxidation methods can be used as a polishing stage or as an auxiliary treatment for further biological processes and membrane separation, with the potential for combination within the same system.

Ferrate self-decomposition in water is also a self-activation process: Role of Fe(V) species and enhancement with Fe(III) in methyl phenyl sulfoxide oxidation by excess ferrate

Zhuang-Song Huang et al.

Summary: This study elucidated the crucial role of ferrate self-decomposition in oxidation reactions and developed a mechanistic kinetics model to understand the involvement of Fe(V), Fe(VI), and Fe(IV) species in the oxidation of PMSO. Results showed that the Fe(V) species derived from ferrate self-decomposition contributed significantly to PMSO oxidation, while the oxidation pathways of Fe(VI) and Fe(V) were influenced by different factors. The findings suggest the general role of Fe(V) and the potential enhancement by Fe(III) during ferrate oxidation of micropollutants.
