The influence of increased content of Ni(III) in NiFe LDH via Zn doping on electrochemical catalytic oxygen evolution reaction

Yan Zhou et al.

Summary: Developing efficient oxygen evolution electrocatalysts is crucial for water electrolysis. This study presents the synthesis of Zn-doped NiFe LDH through a simple hydrothermal reaction. Structural characterizations reveal that Zn doping induces lattice distortion, facilitating the formation of active NiOOH layers. The Zn-NiFe LDH electrocatalyst exhibits excellent performance in the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction, surpassing the state-of-the-art RuO2. Furthermore, Zn doping significantly enhances the electrocatalytic stability of NiFe LDH, with a slight increase in potential after 100 hours of continuous OER electrolysis. The Zn-NiFe LDH provides an ideal strategy for designing highly efficient OER electrocatalysts for practical applications.

Nanostructured manganese oxide on fullerene soot for water oxidation under neutral conditions

Saeideh Salimi et al.

Summary: The sluggish kinetics of the oxygen-evolution reaction (OER) during water oxidation leads to high overpotential for water splitting. Carbon-based material/Mn oxide composites, such as the Mn oxide/fullerene soot (MnOx/FS) composite studied in this research, have been reported as efficient OER catalysts. Compared to pristine FS, the OER activity of MnOx/FS is 2.5 times higher at 2.25 V vs. RHE.

Demonstrating the source of inherent instability in NiFe LDH-based OER electrocatalysts

Daire Tyndall et al.

Summary: Nickel-iron layered double hydroxides are highly active catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction, but their stability within the active voltage window is limited. This study identifies the source of catalyst instability by tracking changes in the material during OER activity. In-situ and ex-situ Raman analyses reveal long-term effects on catalyst performance due to crystallographic phase changes. Electrochemically stimulated compositional degradation and leaching of Fe metals from highly active edge sites are identified as the main causes of activity loss.

Investigation of nickel iron layered double hydroxide for water oxidation in different pH electrolytes

Qixian Xie et al.

Summary: Nickel iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) is an excellent catalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline electrolytes, but it performs poorly in neutral electrolytes. This study used electrochemical measurements, operando surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy, and operando 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy to investigate the mechanism of NiFe LDH for OER in different pH electrolytes. The results showed that the rate-determining step (RDS) of OER on NiFe LDH is different in alkaline and neutral conditions, indicating the importance of pH in the OER mechanism.

Multiple structural defects in ultrathin NiFe-LDH nanosheets synergistically and remarkably boost water oxidation reaction

Zhongyin Zhao et al.

Summary: By utilizing a simple and green H2O2-assisted etching method, ultrathin NiFe layered double hydroxide nanosheets with a holey structure, oxygen vacancies, and Ni3+ defects on nickel foam were prepared, leading to a synergistic effect that exposed more active sites and significantly improved intrinsic activity. This optimized catalyst exhibited excellent OER performance due to the pseudo re-oxidized metal-stable Ni3+ near oxygen vacancies, suppressing 3d-e(g) of Ni-site and reducing the electron-transfer barrier. This work offers a new approach for fabricating advanced electrocatalysts for renewable energy conversion technologies.
