Flexibility evaluation of wind-PV-hydro multi-energy complementary base considering the compensation ability of cascade hydropower stations

Mingzhe Zhao et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new method for evaluating the flexibility of watershed-type wind-PV-hydro multi-energy complementary bases (WMCB), considering the complementary characteristics of cascade hydropower stations. The method quantifies the flexible supply of hydropower and the flexibility demand of wind-PV power, and analyzes the impact of wind-PV power capacity improvement on system flexibility. The case study results indicate the suitable wind-PV power capacity ratio, as well as the potential for wind-PV power capacity development with additional flexibility resources.

Preliminary feasibility analysis for remaking the function of cascade hydropower stations to enhance hydropower flexibility: A case study in China

Juntao Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the feasibility of transforming cascade hydropower stations into a large-scale hydropower energy storage system to improve the utilization efficiency of hydropower. The simulation results show that this system can effectively reduce energy loss, store excess electricity, and achieve price arbitrage during periods of price differences. However, it is economically viable only when the efficiency of the pumping station is above 55%.

Optimum allocation of battery energy storage systems for power grid enhanced with solar energy

Farihan Mohamad et al.

Summary: The penetration of renewable energy sources, particularly solar energy, is increasing globally to reduce carbon emissions. Battery energy storage systems (BESSs) emerge as an important component of solar-integrated power systems due to their ability to store surplus solar power. However, traditional BESS deployment lacks consideration of network topology and cooperation among BESSs, limiting their ability to collectively store excess solar power.

Optimizing the Reservoir Operation for Hydropower Generation by Using the Flexibility Index to Consider Inflow Uncertainty

Weifeng Xu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on addressing the uncertainty in reservoir operation by proposing a flexible FO model that considers the flexibility index and hydropower generation. Using the Three Gorges Reservoir as a case study, a trade-off between hydropower generation and flexibility index was observed, with a strategy of lowering reservoir levels in nonflood seasons to improve flexibility. The FO model effectively handles uncertainty in reservoir operation but may be slightly conservative in terms of hydropower generation.
