A practical solution for excess energy management in a diesel-backed microgrid with high renewable penetration

Saeed Sepasi et al.

Summary: This research investigates a cost-effective solution to mitigate excess energy from renewable resources, mainly PV systems, while maintaining the grid's minimum reserve level backed by diesel generators. By using a resistive dynamic load bank (DLB) and a control algorithm, the diesel generators are prevented from operating below a setpoint defined by the local utility. This DLB system has been successfully implemented in coordination with the local utility on Molokai Island in Hawaii, allowing for increased deployment of customer-sited PV systems without compromising grid reliability.

Emission-averse techno-economical study for an isolated microgrid system with solar energy and battery storage

Maneesh Kumar et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an optimal stochastic operation strategy for renewable energy supported isolated microgrids. It incorporates a model to reduce CO2 emission by optimally utilizing carbon capture-based technology. A carbon capture unit is introduced to reduce emission from fossil fuel-based units, with a fractional penalty imposed on carbon emissions based on CCU efficiency. The problem is formulated as a multivariable constrained cost optimization problem and solved using the 'fmincon' solver in MATLAB. Results show the economic viability of the microgrid system with different RE penetration levels and emission factors.
