Ethnic, Nativity and Country of Origin Inequities in Preterm Birth Among Hispanic and Non-Hispanic Whites in New York City: What's Stress Got to Do With It?

Summary: Hispanic populations experience good birth outcomes despite socioeconomic disadvantage. However, this health advantage deteriorates over time and the understanding of this phenomenon is limited. Stressful life events were found to be associated with increased risk of preterm birth, but they do not explain the differences in preterm birth among U.S.-born Hispanics and different Hispanic subgroups.

The Culture is Prevention Project: measuring cultural connectedness and providing evidence that culture is a social determinant of health for Native Americans

Summary: This study examines the association between increased Native American culture/cultural connectedness and better mental health/well-being and physical health. The results indicate that increased cultural connectedness is significantly associated with better mental health/well-being and satisfaction with life, as well as predicting good physical health days. It suggests that Native American/Indigenous culture plays a crucial role in improving mental health/well-being and physical health.

Real-time predictors of food parenting practices and child eating behaviors in racially/ethnically diverse families

Summary: This study examined the associations between real-time parental stress and depressed mood, food parenting practices, and child eating behaviors. It found that high levels of parental stress and depressed mood earlier in the day were associated with controlling food parenting practices and child food fussiness at dinner the same night.

The Medical Outcome Study Social Support Survey (MOS-SSS): A psychometric systematic review

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate and synthesize the psychometric properties of the MOS-SSS and identify high-quality versions for future research and practice. A systematic review was conducted, and 35 articles were included. Eleven validated versions of MOS-SSS in various populations and languages were identified. The English 19-item, Farsi Persian 19-item, and Vietnamese 19-item versions were recommended, while the Italian 19-item and Malaysian 13-item versions were not. Other versions showed potential for future use. Proper procedures for the development and validation of translated versions of MOS-SSS were recommended.

Breastfeeding Practices and Postpartum Depression in Mexican Women during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Cross-Sectional Study

Summary: This study aimed to examine the prevalence of breastfeeding practices and postpartum depression among Mexican women during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results suggest that the pandemic has negatively affected the well-being of postpartum women, and encouraging breastfeeding and skin-to-skin contact can improve emotional stability and mental health in this population.

Effects of Stress and Nativity on Maternal Antenatal Substance Use and Postnatal Mental Disorders

Summary: The study found that US-born mothers had a higher risk of substance use and CMDs compared to foreign-born mothers. Additionally, US-born mothers with high stress during pregnancy were more likely to engage in substance use and develop CMDs compared to foreign-born mothers with low stress. High stress alone was also associated with increased odds of CMDs among foreign-born Hispanic mothers.

Maternal Perceived Stress During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Pre-Existing Risk Factors and Concurrent Correlates in New York City Women

Summary: This study examined the impact of pre-pandemic mental health and sociodemographic characteristics on the stress levels of pregnant women and mothers of young children during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed that a pre-pandemic history of depression, financial difficulties, and COVID-19 infection were significant risk factors for high perceived stress. Being Hispanic, having higher resiliency scores, and having preexisting social support were protective factors. The main contributors to stress during the pandemic were financial and societal factors related to COVID-19.
