Observation of nitrogen oxide-influenced chlorine chemistry and source analysis of Cl2 in the Yangtze River Delta, China

Fangbing Li et al.

Summary: This study measures the concentrations and diurnal variations of Cl-2, ClNO2, and N2O5 in the atmosphere of Shanghai and Changzhou using HR-ToF-CIMS. The results show differences in the levels and temporal patterns of these species between the two cities, indicating different N2O5 uptake and Cl activation efficiency. Heterogeneous uptake of ClNO2 and photolysis of O-3 are believed to contribute to efficient Cl-2 formation at night and day, respectively.

Large Daytime Molecular Chlorine Missing Source at a Suburban Site in East China

Qianjie Chen et al.

Summary: The simulation of molecular chlorine (Cl-2) in atmospheric chemistry models is not accurate. In this study, Cl-2 up to 40 ppt was observed at a suburban site in East China around noon. A box model with up-to-date chlorine chemistry and comprehensive observational constraints was used to investigate Cl-2 formation mechanisms. The missing source of daytime Cl-2 was estimated, which increased the chlorine radical abundance by a factor of 4 in the afternoon and enhanced the oxidation of volatile organic compounds.

An Updated Anthropogenic Emission Inventory of Reactive Chlorine Precursors in China

Sijia Yin et al.

Summary: This study estimates the emissions of chlorine gas in mainland China in 2019 and identifies the major sources and regions. The study finds that the use of chlorine-containing disinfectants and biomass burning are the main contributors to chlorine gas emissions. The emission intensity varies among provinces, with the highest emissions in the eastern region. The findings of this study provide insights into chlorine production and its impact on air quality in mainland China.

Long-term trends and drivers of aerosol pH in eastern China

Min Zhou et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the trend of aerosol pH in eastern China from 2011 to 2019 and finds that the implementation of air pollution control measures has led to minor changes in aerosol pH. Temperature and relative humidity are the main drivers of seasonal and diurnal variations in aerosol pH. According to the best health effect pollution control scenario, reducing NH3 and NOx emissions can effectively mitigate haze pollution in eastern China.

OH and HO2 radical chemistry at a suburban site during the EXPLORE-YRD campaign in 2018

Xuefei Ma et al.

Summary: The observation in the Yangtze River Delta revealed that HONO photolysis was the dominant radical primary source, monoterpene played an important role as a precursor of RO2 radicals, and the low ozone production efficiency indicated a slow radical propagation rate and short chain length.

Secondary aerosol formation in winter haze over the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region, China

Dongjie Shang et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the severe haze pollution in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region during winter, the mitigation actions taken by the Chinese government since 2013, and the importance of secondary aerosol components during haze episodes. It highlights the need for research on the mechanisms of secondary aerosol formation to effectively control particle pollution in the region.

Impacts of chlorine chemistry and anthropogenic emissions on secondary pollutants in the Yangtze river delta region

Jingyi Li et al.

Summary: The study found that multiphase chemistry of chlorine has significant impacts on the oxidation capacity, ozone, and particulate matter in the Yangtze River Delta region. Ozone is enhanced in some regions while particulate matter increases mainly due to higher levels of chloride, ammonium, organic aerosols, and sulfate. Nitrate exhibits heterogeneous variations in different areas.

Simulation of secondary organic aerosol over the Yangtze River Delta region: The impacts from the emissions of intermediate volatility organic compounds and the SOA modeling framework

Ling Huang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of IVOC emissions on SOA concentrations in the Yangtze River Delta region of China. Two methods are used to estimate IVOC emissions, which significantly enhance simulated SOA concentrations, with the traditional two-product modeling framework showing an increase of 8%-27% at the monitoring site. Using the 1.5-Dimension Volatility Basis Set (VBS) approach increases simulated SOA by 76% but reduces POA concentration by 72%, leading to an overall decrease in organic aerosol (OA) by 12%.

Impacts of chlorine emissions on secondary pollutants in China

Yizhou Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found a significant increase in chloride content in PM2.5 during autumn and winter over North China, mainly caused by anthropogenic chlorine emissions, which could potentially affect the formation of secondary pollutants in the troposphere. By using an updated meteorological and chemical mechanism model, it is possible to accurately simulate the chlorine content in the atmosphere in China and help reduce concentration biases in PM2.5 and O-3.

Anthropogenic emissions of atomic chlorine precursors in the Yangtze River Delta region, China

Xin Yi et al.

Summary: Chlorine radical plays a crucial role in the formation of ozone and secondary aerosols in the troposphere. This study provides a comprehensive emission inventory for major atomic chlorine precursors in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region of China in 2017, with substantial emissions of HCl mainly from biomass burning and coal combustion, and fine particulate Cl- mainly emitted from industrial processing.
