Effect of Strontium Additions on the Microstructural and Mechanical Properties of Al-17Si-4Cu-0.6Mg-3Zn (B390+2 wt%Zn) Alloy

Merve Calis et al.

Summary: In this study, an Al-17Si-4Cu-0.6Mg-3Zn (B390 + 2 wt%Zn) alloy and five B390 + 2 wt% Zn-Sr alloys were produced by permanent mold casting method. Microstructural evaluations and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies confirmed the phases of the alloys. Hardness, tensile strength, and elongation to fracture values were determined for the alloys. Sr addition caused significant changes in the microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloys. The hardness and tensile strength of the B390 + 2 wt%Zn-Sr alloys increased with increasing Sr ratio up to 0.075 wt%. The elongation to fracture value of the B390 + 2wt%Zn alloy increased with 0.01 wt% Sr addition, but decreased continuously with increasing Sr content beyond that level.

Effect of Cooling Rate on the Microstructure and Solidification Characteristics of Al-20%Mg2Si In Situ Composites Using Computer-Aided Thermal Analysis Technique

S. Ashkvary et al.

Summary: The formation, size, and morphology of Mg2Si intermetallics in Al-Mg2Si in situ composites significantly influence the mechanical properties of the alloy. Cooling rate during solidification has a direct impact on the microstructure and characteristics of the reinforcement particles. This study investigated the effect of different cooling rates on the microstructure and solidification parameters of Al-20%Mg2Si in situ composite using cooling curve thermal analysis technique. The results showed that increasing the cooling rate resulted in higher nucleation temperature of primary Mg2Si, binary eutectic, and ternary eutectic, while decreasing the growth temperature of the eutectic reactions. Furthermore, the Mg2Si reinforcement particles changed from coarse dendritic to fine polygonal shape, accompanied by decreased size and increased density.

The growth mechanism and morphology evolution of primary Si during slow cooling solidification of high purity Al-15Si alloy with Cr additions

Chunyu Li et al.

Summary: The effects of Cr content on the growth mechanism and morphology evolution of primary Si were studied in Al-15Si alloys. The results show that the addition of Cr increases the nucleation undercooling of Si and inhibits macroscopic segregation. The morphology of primary Si transforms from irregular to regular shape and the grain size is reduced in the presence of Cr.

Morphologically templated nucleation of primary Si on AlP in hypereutectic Al-Si alloys

Xiangzhen Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, the morphologies of AlP crystals were comprehensively studied, revealing two categories of AlP crystals and their morphological templated nucleation of primary Si phase. This process increased the percentage of primary Si twin crystals in the alloy and eliminated dendritic growth and hopper structures inside primary Si, maintaining faceted solid crystals through layer-by-layer growth mechanism. The insight into morphologically templated nucleation provides a new perspective on the mechanism of heterogeneous nucleation of primary Si phase on AlP nuclei.

Summary: The addition of Eu in Al-7Si alloys changes the morphology of eutectic Si, decreases the number of eutectic cells, increases their size, and lowers the nucleation temperature. Eu also causes phosphorus segregation and affects the growth direction and form of eutectic Si cells.

The Metallurgy of Aluminum Alloys for Structural High-Pressure Die Castings

Geoffrey K. Sigworth et al.

Summary: Aluminum alloys for high-pressure die casting often have enough dissolved iron to reduce die wear and soldering, but this reduces ductility in the final product. Recent improvements in machine design and new alloys have enabled the production of high ductility, structural HPDC components. This paper details the chemical and metallurgical factors contributing to this development.
