Experimental investigation into the effect of magnetorheological fluid damper on vibration and chatter in straight turning process

Mohsen Emami et al.

Summary: Magneto-Rheological (MR) dampers have been widely studied for their potential in semi-active control. In this research, an MR damper was designed and tested for its vibration control performance in straight turning operation. It was observed that the MR damper effectively reduced tool vibration and chatter, as well as improved the surface roughness of the machining.

Reluctance-Based Modular Active Damper for Chatter Suppression in Boring Bars With Different Overhangs

Asier Astarloa et al.

Summary: Boring operations are often limited by chatter vibrations caused by the flexibility of boring bars. Passive tuned mass dampers near the tool tip have been proposed as a solution, but they need to be tuned for a specific frequency for each bar. This work presents the development of an active inertial damper based on reluctance, which offers stability improvement over a broad frequency range, enabling chatter-free boring operations at different bar overhangs.

An experimental evaluation of particle impact dampers applied on the tool for milling of hardened steel complex surface

Victor Rossi Saciotto et al.

Summary: In the manufacturing of dies and molds, vibrations can be reduced by using impact dampers in the tools. This study analyzes the effect of different materials and geometries acting as impact damper elements and compares the performance of commercial tool holders with dampened tool holders in milling processes. The results show that tools with impact dampers generate smoother surfaces and lower vibrations compared to tools without dampers.

Active Chatter Mitigation by Optimal Control of Regenerative Machining Process Dynamics

Alper Dumanli et al.

Summary: This article introduces a novel control system design for machine tool feed drives to mitigate chatter vibrations in subtractive manufacturing processes. By utilizing an H-infinity control framework, the proposed controller stabilizes machining dynamics and ensures robust process stability. Experimental validations show that regenerative chatter vibrations in orthogonal turning processes can be effectively suppressed, leading to up to a five-fold increase in MRR.

Summary: This paper presents a method for active vibration control in machining processes using robust delayed-state feedback control based on Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals. The controller synthesis problem is formulated as a set of linear matrix inequality equations that can be solved numerically.
