Spatial variation of pollen receipt and effects of heterospecific pollen on seed set in Salvia przewalskii

Qiang Fang et al.

Summary: The spatial variation in pollen deposition and its relationship with seed set was investigated for Salvia przewalskii across eight sites in the Hengduan Mountain region of southwest China. Results showed significant differences in pollen loads, proportions and species composition of heterospecific pollen among sites. The association between conspecific pollen and seed set varied among sites, while the association between heterospecific pollen receipt and seed set was consistently negative across sites. This study suggests that there is variation in the quantity and fitness effect of pollen receipt across sites, which can drive local adaptation.

Intraspecific variation of invaded pollination networks-the role of pollen-transport, pollen-transfer and different levels of biological organization

Carine Emer et al.

Summary: Pollen movement from anthers to stigmas and intraspecific variation in interaction specialization are important factors in understanding invaded pollination networks. This study found significant intraspecific variation in pollen loads and deposition by the invasive plant Impatiens glandulifera, with a few individuals acting as super-spreaders while most individuals carried little or no alien pollen. Downscaling from pollen-transport to pollen-transfer and from species to individual-based networks revealed higher specialization and niche partitioning, suggesting the importance of population niches in invasion biology.

Heterospecific pollen deposition is positively associated with reproductive success in a diverse hummingbird-pollinated plant community

Sabrina Aparecida Lopes et al.

Summary: The study found seasonality in HPD, with greater diversity and frequency of heterospecific pollen on stigmas of species flowering in the dry season compared to the rainy season. Stigmas of ecologically generalized species had more heterospecific pollen, while the relationship for ecologically specialized species depended on floral phenotype.

Pollen transfer networks reveal alien species as main heterospecific pollen donors with fitness consequences for natives

Victor Parra-Tabla et al.

Summary: The study shows that HP transfer in invaded co-flowering communities is common, with native and alien species playing different roles within the HP transfer networks, regulated by different floral traits. Alien plants play a central role as HP donors and are more tolerant to HP receipt compared to natives, highlighting overlooked mechanisms facilitating alien plant invasion and success within native co-flowering communities.

Pollen analysis using multispectral imaging flow cytometry and deep learning

Susanne Dunker et al.

Summary: Pollen identification and quantification are essential tasks in various fields like pollination, paleobotany, allergology, honey analysis, and forensics. This study introduces a novel method using multispectral imaging flow cytometry and deep learning, which proved to deliver high accuracy and fast measurement for pollen analysis. By training a convolutional neural network classifier on a large dataset, the approach can accurately identify and differentiate pollen from different plant species, even those that are difficult to distinguish using traditional microscopy.

Floral Color Properties of Serpentine Seep Assemblages Depend on Community Size and Species Richness

Kathryn A. LeCroy et al.

Summary: Functional traits, especially those impacting fitness, play a role in shaping ecological and evolutionary relationships between coexisting species in the same trophic level. The distribution of floral colors can reflect pollinator-mediated interactions and evolutionary contingencies in community assembly. Smaller communities with lower species richness may be more affected by competitive exclusion in shaping species richness of flower color.

Plant-centred sampling estimates higher beta diversity of interactions than pollinator-based sampling across habitats

Camila S. Souza et al.

Summary: Plant-centred networks showed higher beta-diversity of interactions in space compared to animal-centred networks, with turnover being the main explanatory factor for beta-diversity in both methods. However, rewiring was proportionately more important in the animal-centred method. Plant-centred method indicated lower network modularity and specialization, while floral traits modulated the effects of sampling method on species-level network metrics. Combining animal- and plant-centred approaches returned intermediate values for beta-diversity of interactions and network metrics, suggesting that different methods may be better suited for answering questions at different scales.

Pollinator sharing among co-flowering plants mediates patterns of pollen transfer

Tao Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that not all plant species sharing pollinators had pollen transfer between them, but plant species pairs with shared pollinators were more likely to have heterospecific pollen transfer. Additionally, flowers with greater color dissimilarity exchanged less heterospecific pollen.

Causes and consequences of variation in heterospecific pollen receipt in Oenothera fruticosa

Gerard X. Smith et al.

Summary: The study found that different species of pollen were widely present on the stigmas of Oenothera fruticosa, but the amount received varied greatly and was unrelated to conspecific pollen receipt. Heterospecific pollen receipt depended on pollinator type, the proportion of nearby conspecific flowers, and flowering date. Naturally occurring levels of heterospecific pollen were sufficient to negatively impact seed set, but large amounts of conspecific pollen counteracted this effect.

Spatial variation in the intensity of interactions via heterospecific pollen transfer may contribute to local and global patterns of plant diversity

Gerardo Arceo-Gomez

Summary: The study reveals that heterospecific pollen transfer can directly influence plant interactions and play a significant role in generating plant diversity. The existence of spatial variation has important implications for the interactions between species within plant communities and deserves further investigation.

Pollinator effectiveness is affected by intraindividual behavioral variation

Avery L. Russell et al.

Summary: Variation in pollinator quality, resulting from different foraging behaviors, can have significant impacts on pollen removal and deposition on flowers. Body size of bees mainly affects pollen removal, while foraging behavior primarily affects pollen deposition. The effects of behavior on pollen deposition depend on plant species and the quantity of pollen on the bee's abdomen.

What are the key mechanisms that alter the morphology of stigmatic papillae in Arabidopsis thaliana?

Kazuma Katano et al.

Summary: The study investigates the mechanisms of pollen attachment and morphological changes in stigma, proposing that the RLK-ROPGEF-ROP network may be involved in the elongation of stigmatic papillae and suggesting that increased Ca2+ leading to F-actin degradation could be a potential mechanism for the changes in stigmatic papillae.
