The ?mica crisis? in Donegal, Ireland-A case of internal sulfate attack?

Andreas Leemann et al.

Summary: In County Donegal, northwest Ireland, the Mica Crisis has resulted in severe structural defects in thousands of homes built with concrete blocks, due to high mica content in the aggregates. This project investigated four affected homes and found that, aside from mica, the aggregates contained iron sulphides, particularly pyrrhotite, with sulfur content exceeding the European standard for concrete aggregates. Microstructural analysis and thermodynamic modelling revealed that the concrete suffered from internal sulfate attack triggered by pyrrhotite oxidation. Furthermore, the results of this investigation were representative of the situation in Donegal, as evidenced by data from chartered engineers on almost a hundred damaged homes.

Superpixel segmentations for thin sections: Evaluation of methods to enable the generation of machine learning training data sets

Jiaxin Yu et al.

Summary: Training data is crucial for the development of ML and DL algorithms. Lack of well-labeled training image data has hindered the development of DL methods like CNNs in mineral thin section image identification. To speed up the annotation process, a human-computer collaborative pipeline using superpixel segmentation is proposed. The pipeline shows efficient and accurate annotation of large and complex images.

Future and emerging supplementary cementitious materials

Ruben Snellings et al.

Summary: Identifying new sources of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) is crucial for the decarbonization of the cement industry. This review paper examines recent scientific literature on understanding, assessment, and processing of future and emerging SCM resources. Materials like calcined clays, natural pozzolans, and reclaimed coal fly ashes are gaining market access and their processing and performance have been well-established in local contexts. However, future research is needed to better understand the impact of these materials on cement and concrete properties and establish the viability of proposed beneficiation processing.

Unidirectional penetration approach for characterizing sulfate attack mechanisms on cement mortars and pastes

Qiao Wang et al.

Summary: The degradation of cementitious materials by sulfate ions can be divided into chemical and physical sulfate attack. This paper introduces a new experimental setup that examines sulfate ion ingress under unidirectional capillary action to mimic field conditions. The results demonstrate that both chemical and physical sulfate attack occur in the same sample, highlighting the potential of this method to uncover the mechanisms involved in sulfate attack.

Cementitious phase quantification using deep learning

Shohreh Sheiati et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of deep learning-based backscattered electron (BSE) image segmentation to automate the phase quantification of cementitious materials and estimate their hydration degree and porosity. The initial findings show a strong correlation between the results from BSE image analysis, quantitative XRD, and EDS/BSE when using arbitrary thresholds for phase segmentation, especially for samples with a hydration age >28 days. The success of automated image segmentation, based on learning material composition from a meticulously analyzed image database, is demonstrated in the second part, where it can predict the content of numerous other images within seconds. This novel approach can transform the analysis of cementitious materials' phase composition into a routine test for quality control, eliminating the need for specialized equipment and expertise.

Summary: The new thermodynamic model CASH+ accurately describes the equilibrium composition, stability, solubility, and density of C-S-H gel-like phases under varying chemical conditions. Its incremental extensions allow for accommodating alkali, aluminum, and other cations while keeping all thermodynamic properties of endmembers and interaction parameters fixed. Initial standard thermodynamic properties were estimated using predictive methods and the parameterized core sub-model in the Ca-Si-H2O system showed good performance up to 90 degrees C in the presence of liquid water.

Mingze Jiang et al.

Summary: Appropriate quality control and decision-making are crucial for maintaining stable cement production and developing alternative cements. Scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy provides spatially resolved phase and chemical information for cement clinker, which can be used for quantifying phase fractions. The research demonstrates that image analysis tools can be utilized to segment sub-micron scale clinker phases and quantify all phase fractions, with statistical evaluation implemented to ensure the representativeness of the imaged area for all clinker phases.
