Electro-optical Switching of a Topological Polariton Laser

Philipp Gagel et al.

Summary: Implementing concepts of topological protection in photonics has provided a new degree of freedom for photonic devices. In this work, arrays of coupled microresonators were used to achieve exciton-polariton lasing from a topological domain boundary defect. By manipulating doping levels and applying a bias voltage, control over the condensation behavior of polaritons in the topological mode was demonstrated. The ability to switch lasing between the topological defect and a trivial mode was also shown, suggesting the potential for ultrafast, topologically protected photonic switches at the single photon level.

Spatial and polarization-resolved exciton-photon coupling in quasi-whispering-gallery mode ZnO microrod cavity

Huihui Wei et al.

Summary: In this study, the coupling of excitons and Whisper Gallery Mode (WGM) resonances in a ZnO microrod cavity was measured in the visible and ultraviolet spectral ranges. The results showed that the exciton-WGM coupling led to split modes with clear spatial dependence. The polarization dependent behavior and the blueshift of the upper polariton branch mode were observed, indicating the transition polarization of different types of excitons in the ZnO microcavity. Numerical simulations supported the experimental findings. This research reveals the spatial and polarization dependent exciton-photon coupling in ZnO microrods, suggesting potential applications in the field of photonic polaritons ranging from ultraviolet lasers to optoelectronic devices.

Room-temperature polariton lasing in GaN microrods with large Rabi splitting

Huanqing Chen et al.

Summary: Room-temperature polariton lasing is achieved in GaN microrods grown by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. A large Rabi splitting is demonstrated, distinguishing the coherent light emission from conventional photon lasing. This has potential applications in integrated optical circuits and the study of exciting phenomena in macroscopic quantum states.

Optically Controlled Femtosecond Polariton Switch at Room Temperature

Fei Chen et al.

Summary: In this paper, a room temperature ultrafast polaritonic switch is realized, where the population of Bose-Einstein condensate can be depleted and revived using an ultrashort optical control pulse. The erasure and revival of the polariton condensates can be visualized using femtosecond angle-resolved spectroscopic imaging technique.

Exciton-polaritons in GaAs-based slab waveguide photonic crystals

Summary: Opening a gap in the exciton-dominated part of the polariton spectrum is a promising first step towards the realization of quantum-Hall-like states arising from topologically nontrivial hybridization of excitons and photons. By etching square lattice arrays of shallow holes into the uppermost layer of the structure, gaps on the order of 10 meV are opened in the photonic mode dispersion, and their size and light-matter composition can be tuned by proximity to the strongly coupled exciton resonance. Gaps ranging from almost fully photonic to highly excitonic can be demonstrated.

Room temperature exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensation in organic single-crystal microribbon cavities

Ji Tang et al.

Summary: The researchers demonstrated room temperature EP BEC in organic single-crystal microribbon natural cavities, utilizing the efficient strong coupling between Frenkel excitons and photons. By taking advantage of interactions in EP condensates and dimension confinement effects, they were able to achieve controllable output of coherent light from the microribbons.
