A novel trophic archive: Practical considerations of compound-specific amino acid δ15N analysis of carbonate-bound organic matter in bivalve shells (Arctica islandica)

Qian Huang et al.

Summary: Compound-specific stable nitrogen isotope (delta 15N) analysis is a powerful tool for studying trophic dynamics and nitrogen biogeochemistry. This study presents a refined analytical technique and compares different sample pretreatment methods, providing high-resolution data for reconstructing changes in the origin and fate of nitrogen in aquatic food webs.

Calibrating bulk and amino acid δ13C and δ15N isotope ratios between bivalve soft tissue and shell for paleoecological reconstructions

Natasha L. Vokhshoori et al.

Summary: Ecological isotope proxies measured in ancient bivalve shell matrix protein have great potential for paleoecological reconstruction. Compound-specific isotopes of amino acids (CSI-AA) show promise as an ideal tool for developing paleoecological proxies. This study compared stable isotope values in bivalve shell and soft tissue to test the accuracy of ecological isotope proxies. The results indicate the need for a new trophic discrimination factor and shell isotope enrichment factor for accurate paleoecological reconstructions.

Biomineralized Materials as Model Systems for Structural Composites: Intracrystalline Structural Features and Their Strengthening and Toughening Mechanisms

Zhifei Deng et al.

Summary: Biomineralized composites have unique structural designs and mechanical properties. The structural features within the mineral building blocks significantly modify the mechanical properties of biogenic minerals. This review discusses the intracrystalline structural features and their mechanical significance in three common biomineral systems, and proposes future research directions and challenges.

Biomineralization: Integrating mechanism and evolutionary history

Pupa U. P. A. Gilbert et al.

Summary: Calcium carbonate biomineralizing organisms have had significant roles in the history of life and the global carbon cycle. By integrating mechanisms of CaCO3 skeleton formation with evolutionary history, omics, and isotopic data, a model for CaCO3 biomineralization applicable to all phyla is proposed, aiding in understanding the environmental sensitivity of marine calcifiers and their resilience in 21st century acidifying oceans.

Laboratory Assessment of the Impact of Chemical Oxidation, Mineral Dissolution, and Heating on the Nitrogen Isotopic Composition of Fossil-Bound Organic Matter

Alfredo Martinez-Garcia et al.

Summary: The effect of oxidative degradation, fossil dissolution, and thermal alteration on the N isotopic composition of different fossils was studied. The experiments showed that these processes had negligible effects on the N isotopic composition and content of the fossils. The organic matter in fossils is well protected by the mineral matrix.

Variation in δ15N from shell-associated organic matter in bivalves: Implications for studies of modern and fossil ecosystems

Shibajyoti Das et al.

Summary: Analysis of nitrogen stable isotopes (δ N-15) in bivalve shells can help reconstruct food webs and resolve uncertainty about trophic position. This study found a significant variation in δ N-15 values within shells, influenced by factors such as diet, ontogeny, and nutrient turnover. High-resolution values show seasonal controls and enrichment following peak productivity, suggesting a link to nutrient cycling. Studies in a paleo setting should analyze multiple specimens to capture the full range of δ N-15 values within a population.

Assessing δ15N values in the carbonate-bound organic matrix and periostracum of bivalve shells as environmental archives

Lauren E. Graniero et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the reliability of δ N-15 values in bivalve shells for recording particulate nitrogen values in rivers and estuaries, showing a positive correlation between CBOM and periostracum values. The δ N-15 values in different tissues suggest different trophic levels and N sources, while differences in CBOM values are attributed to land-use changes and species trophic levels.

Ontogenetic δ15N Trends and Multidecadal Variability in Shells of the Bivalve Mollusk, Arctica islandica

Bernd R. Schoene et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of directed ontogenetic trends on stable nitrogen isotope values in the carbonate-bound organic matrix of bivalve shells. The results show a gradual decrease in these values over time, likely due to changes in the type of proteins synthesized at different life stages. Additionally, distinct seasonal to multidecadal variations in the isotope values were identified, influenced by fluctuations in nutrient supply and nitrate utilization mediated by ocean circulation patterns.
