Recreational land use contributes to the loss of marine biodiversity

Elina A. A. Virtanen et al.

Summary: Coastal areas play a crucial role in the human-nature relationship, with recreation, tourism, and aesthetic values shaping these areas. However, the socioeconomic drivers of biodiversity change in coastal regions have been largely overlooked. Soft sediment seafloors support diverse species communities and contribute to ecosystem functionality. Dredging is a major threat to these areas, affecting resident organisms and their habitats.

Rapid Site Selection to Prioritize Coastal Seascapes for Nature-Based Solutions With Multiple Benefits

Simon J. Pittman et al.

Summary: Coastal seascapes are valuable land-sea systems that provide numerous benefits but are increasingly under threat from human activities. To protect, sustainably manage, and restore these seascapes, evidence-based site selection and an integrated framework are essential.

Practical Marine Spatial Management of Ecologically or Biologically Significant Marine Areas: Emerging Lessons From Evidence-Based Planning and Implementation in a Developing-World Context

Linda R. Harris et al.

Summary: This article discusses the process of implementing biodiversity management in EBSAs in the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem (BCLME), emphasizing the importance of systematic conservation planning and multi-sector sea-use guidelines in identifying priority areas and developing management recommendations. Through regional cooperation and international review, different countries are taking actions to enhance EBSA management in marine spatial planning and marine protected area processes.

Evaluating the evidence for ecological effectiveness of South Africa's marine protected areas

S. P. Kirkman et al.

Summary: The ecological effectiveness of South Africa's marine protected areas (MPAs) was assessed by reviewing 140 papers, which indicated that MPAs provide some protection to all ecoregions and 87% of ecosystem types, but less than 50% of assessed species groups. Gaps in protection were identified on the west coast, in estuaries, the deep sea, and two ecologically significant areas. Enforcement issues were highlighted, with recommendations for expanding MPAs or increasing no-take areas. Most papers recorded beneficial ecological effects, with full protection showing more effectiveness than partial protection, especially for vulnerable target taxa. Further research and monitoring, as well as a focus on neglected MPAs and species, are recommended for evaluations of effectiveness and improvement of the MPA network.

Social and economic effects of marine protected areas in South Africa, with recommendations for future assessments

J. B. Mann-Lang et al.

Summary: Research on the socio-economic aspects of marine protected areas (MPAs) in South Africa focuses on the extent to which social and economic objectives are included in the purpose statements of MPAs, as well as the scope of social and economic research. Most MPAs lack objectives directly related to people or their needs, with limited studies on negative impacts, tourism, and resource use. Recommendations include enhancing the comprehensive understanding of the social and economic effects of MPAs.
