A Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study on the Diffusion Coefficients of the 'OH, 'H, and 'HO2 Free Radicals Related in the Hydrogen Production Process in Supercritical Water

Weijing Ding et al.

Summary: Supercritical water (SCW) gasification is a clean and efficient method for hydrogen generation from coal or biomass, but the underlying mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to investigate free radical diffusion in SCW. The results showed that higher temperatures enhance the diffusion of free radicals, particularly 'H radicals, promoting hydrogen production reactions. Lower pressures also increase diffusion coefficients of free radicals.

Gasification of chars from tetralin liquefaction of < 1.5 g cm-3 carbon-rich residues derived from waste coal fines in South Africa

R. C. Uwaoma et al.

Summary: The study utilized the float-sink density separation method to produce coal samples for gasification experiments. Results indicated that the liquefaction carbon-rich residue chars had higher gasification reactivity values compared to the coal density fraction chars, possibly due to the catalytic role of inherent mineral matter in the residues. Moreover, an increase in pores associated with the liquefaction experiments of carbon-rich particles aided in the acceleration of gasification reactions.

The influence of Stefan flow on the flow and heat-transfer characteristics of spherical-particle pair in supercritical water

Yingdong Wang et al.

Summary: For mixtures with dispersed reactive particles, especially highly concentrated particles, the interactions between particles and between particles and fluid are complex and have significant effects on the overall flow. This study focuses on the flow and fluid-particle heat transfer characteristics of supercritical water flowing around a fixed two-particle system. The effects of different particle configurations and the influence of Stefan flow are analyzed. The results show that the configurations of two particles have significant impacts on the drag coefficient, Nusselt number, and vortex structure, and the wake vortex structure is strongly affected by Stefan flow, which reduces the drag coefficient and Nusselt number.

A zero-dimensional model of porous char gasification in supercritical water: Experiments and mathematical modeling

Chao Fan et al.

Summary: This study developed a zero-dimensional model of porous char gasification in supercritical water, which can be used for reactor-scale modeling and simulation. The evolution of specific surface area of char was obtained through experiments, and a kinetic model with detailed conversion pathways and consideration of specific surface area evolution was proposed. The model was evaluated by fitting experimental results and calculating intrinsic kinetic parameters. The developed sub-model showed reasonable prediction of gasification process and good description of particle characteristics.

Numerical simulation of hydrothermal liquefaction of algae in a lab-scale coil reactor

Xiao Chen et al.

Summary: A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed to study the effects of thermal conductivity, heat capacity, molar mass, and viscosity on the hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) reactions in a coil type reactor with algae feedstock. It was found that the heat conductivity, heat capacity, and molar mass had negligible effects on the reactions, while viscosity, especially of protein, had the most significant effect on residence time and mass fractions, highlighting the need for better viscosity measurements.

Numerical study of H-2, CH4, CO, O-2 and CO2 diffusion in water near the critical point with molecular dynamics simulation

Xiao Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the diffusion coefficient of H-2, CH4, CO, O-2 and CO2 in water near the critical point using Molecular Dynamics simulation, discussing the main factors that determine the diffusion coefficient. An empirical equation is developed to successfully predict diffusion coefficient near the critical point with a low average absolute relative deviation. The equation shows the best accuracy and simplicity for extension and modification, outperforming other existing equations.

A molecular dynamics simulation study on solubility behaviors of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in supercritical water/hydrogen environment

Weijing Ding et al.

Summary: This study investigated the solubility of PAH oil droplets in supercritical water/hydrogen environment through molecular dynamics simulation, revealing that heavy PAHs are stable in the water phase, while supercritical water and hydrogen promote their miscibility. Additionally, high density and temperature facilitate rapid solvation of PAHs in supercritical water/hydrogen environment, providing theoretical support for the development of complete coal gasification technology for hydrogen production.

Chuang Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the thermodynamic equilibrium analysis of supercritical water gasification involving different feedstocks like coal, sewage sludge, microalgae, and sawdust. The results show that temperature and feed concentration play a crucial role in determining hydrogen yield, while pressure has minimal effects. An optimal feed concentration of 15-20 wt% is found for hydrogen production.

Performance of CO2 and Fe-modified lignin char on arsenic (V) removal from water

Jin Sun Cha et al.

Summary: Biochar produced from pyrolysis of Kraft lignin, modified with CO2 and impregnated with FeOx, showed improved physicochemical properties and arsenic (V) adsorption performance. Among the tested biochars, FeOx-LC-800 displayed the highest adsorption efficiency for arsenic (V) due to its highest Fe-O intensity and large surface area. The Langmuir adsorption model was suitable for fitting the adsorption curve, with a calculated theoretical equilibrium adsorption amount (q(e)) of 6.8 mg/g using a pseudo-second-order kinetic model.

A perspective on sodium-induced agglomeration of Zhundong coal gasification: Experiments and calculations

Haixia Zhang et al.

Summary: This study focuses on gasification reactivity and ash related agglomeration of low-rank ZD coal in CFB process induced by sodium transformation. Results show that gasification temperature greatly affects the reactivity and agglomeration characteristics of ZD coal char, with higher temperature improving reactivity and causing stronger agglomeration tendency. The study suggests that a relatively lower gasification temperature is suitable for ZD coal/char gasification to avoid slagging risks.
