High Prevalence of Vertebral Fractures Associated With Preoperative GH Levels in Patients With Recent Diagnosis of Acromegaly

Stefano Frara et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and determinants of morphometric vertebral fractures (VFs) in patients with recently diagnosed acromegaly. The results showed a higher prevalence of VFs in acromegaly patients compared to controls, and it was found to be associated with GH levels. Therefore, VF assessment should be included in the diagnosis of acromegaly.

Skeletal disorders associated with the growth hormone-insulin-like growth factor 1 axis

Gherardo Mazziotti et al.

Summary: This review highlights the pathophysiological, clinical and therapeutic aspects of skeletal fragility associated with perturbations in the GH-IGF1 axis, such as GH deficiency, anorexia nervosa, ageing and acromegaly. These perturbations cause changes in bone remodelling, increase the risk of fractures, and can affect the effectiveness of treatment.

Novel approaches to bone comorbidity in Cushing's disease: an update

Stefano Frara et al.

Summary: Skeletal complications, including reduced bone mineral density and vertebral fractures, are common in patients with Cushing's disease. A new approach combining various tools is needed to improve diagnosis and management of these bone comorbidities in all CD patients.

Effects of Medical Treatment of Prostate Cancer on Bone Health

Anna Maria Formenti et al.

Summary: The multidisciplinary medical treatment of prostate cancer can prolong survival. Androgen-deprivation therapy may have negative effects on skeletal metabolism, so it is important to be aware and manage bone health in prostate cancer patients.

Assessment of non-traumatic vertebral fractures in Cushing's syndrome patients

T. Apaydin et al.

Summary: This study found a high frequency of vertebral fragility fractures in patients with Cushing's syndrome, with most patients having multiple fractures, and even those with normal bone density may experience fractures.

Osteopathy in mild adrenal Cushing's syndrome and Cushing disease

Stefano Frara et al.

Summary: The review discusses the pathophysiology and effects of endogenous glucocorticoid excess on skeletal endpoints, emphasizing the increased risk of fracture and decreased bone quality in Cushing's syndrome. It suggests that bone antiresorptive agents and teriparatide can improve bone mineral density and reduce fracture risk in some cases, highlighting the importance of awareness and management of bone health in patients with Cushing's syndrome.

Consensus on diagnosis and management of Cushing's disease: a guideline update

Maria Fleseriu et al.

Summary: Cushing's disease requires accurate diagnosis, careful treatment selection, and long-term management. The Pituitary Society convened a consensus workshop to discuss recent evidence and clinical practice. Recommendations regarding lab tests, imaging, and treatment options were collated and discussed, with focus on future research topics.

Radiological Thoracic Vertebral Fractures are Highly Prevalent in COVID-19 and Predict Disease Outcomes

Luigi di Filippo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence and clinical impact of vertebral fractures (VFs) in COVID-19 patients, finding that patients with VFs were more likely to have comorbidities like hypertension and coronary artery disease, require noninvasive mechanical ventilation, and have a higher mortality rate, especially those with severe VFs. The study suggests that morphometric thoracic vertebral evaluation should be performed in all suspected COVID-19 patients undergoing chest x-rays.
