A multidisciplinary approach to characterizing coastal alluvial aquifers to improve understanding of seawater intrusion and submarine groundwater discharge

Laura Martinez-Perez et al.

Summary: In this study, a detailed characterization of a coastal aquifer was conducted using different methods and approaches from various hydrogeological disciplines. The findings revealed that the aquifer behaves as a multi-aquifer and reactive system, with freshwater discharging beneath saltwater at multiple depths. The impact of thin silt layers in the aquifer is significant, opening new avenues for coastal aquifer management and marine ecology.

Hydromechanical characterization of tide-induced head fluctuations in coastal aquifers: The role of delayed yield and minor permeable layers

Tybaud Goyetche et al.

Summary: Tidal analysis is a low-cost alternative to pumping tests for evaluating aquifer hydraulic parameters. It can be done through analytical solutions or numerical simulations. However, analytical solutions are rarely used in practice as they are based on a conceptual model that neglects important factors in real-world conditions.

Identification and quantification of chemical reactions in a coastal aquifer to assess submarine groundwater discharge composition

Tybaud Goyetche et al.

Summary: In coastal aquifers, seawater intrusion and submarine groundwater discharge are two opposing processes that require characterization and quantification to assess the quality and composition of the water. This study proposes a methodology using principal component analysis to identify water sources and reactions, and quantify mixing ratios and the extent of chemical reactions. The research highlights the importance of cation exchange and its impact on other reactions, as well as the spatial distribution of reactions in the aquifer.

New perspectives on the use of 224Ra/228Ra and 222Rn/226Ra activity ratios in groundwater studies

M. Diego-Feliu et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the potential use of Ra-224/Ra-228 and Rn-222/Ra-226 activity ratios as proxies for investigating groundwater systems, with factors like alpha recoil supply, Ra retardation factor, and groundwater transit times playing crucial roles. The advective transport model and activity ratios are utilized for novel applications that bridge hydrogeology and coastal oceanography, focusing on determining groundwater transit times and understanding pathways related to submarine groundwater discharge processes, as demonstrated in a Mediterranean coastal aquifer.

Heat Dissipation Test With Fiber-Optic Distributed Temperature Sensing to Estimate Groundwater Flux

Laura del Val et al.

Summary: A new analytical method involving heating the armor of a single fiber-optic cable is used to measure groundwater flux and thermal parameters, showing four identifiable temperature build-up periods. This method has higher spatial and temporal resolution compared to traditional thermal response tests, and is able to measure advective dissipation over a longer duration.

Determining hydraulic connectivity of the coastal aquifer system of La Plata river estuary (Argentina) to the ocean by analysis of aquifer response to low-frequency tidal components

Mar Alcaraz et al.

Summary: This study proposes a methodology to assess the hydraulic connection to the sea of a well by analyzing its response to sea-level fluctuations and identifying hydraulic and hydro-mechanical responses based on harmonic frequencies. Applied to the aquifer system of La Plata river estuary in western Argentina, it reveals that the hydraulic response of the deepest aquifer (Parana) is less damped than the response of the overlaying aquifer (Puelches), indicating that the Parana aquifer is better connected to the sea than the Puelches.
