An orderly sequence of autonomic and neural events at transient arousal changes

Yameng Gu et al.

Summary: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) is a valuable method for studying functional brain connectivity. This study investigated the potential co-variation between neuronal and autonomic activities during rsfMRI. The researchers identified a recurrent pattern of fMRI (fMRI cascade) accompanied by large EEG and autonomic changes. Importantly, the removal of the fMRI cascade dynamics diminished the correlations between rsfMRI and other signals. These findings suggest that the correlations observed in rsfMRI may partly arise from the fMRI cascades and associated neural and physiological changes at arousal modulations.

Vascular origins of low-frequency oscillations in the cerebrospinal fluid signal in resting-state fMRI: Interpretation using photoplethysmography

Ahmadreza Attarpour et al.

Summary: This study found that signals in different CSF regions are not equally associated with vascular and tissue rs-fMRI signals; the PPG signal is most coherent with the arterial and CSF signals at the cardiac frequency, but coherent with brain tissue at around 0.2 Hz; PIR is most coherent with the CSF signal near 0.03 Hz; and PPG-related vascular oscillations contribute only about 15% to the CSF (and arterial) signal in rs-fMRI.

Investigating mechanisms of fast BOLD responses: The effects of stimulus intensity and of spatial heterogeneity of hemodynamics

Jingyuan E. Chen et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that fast fMRI can track neural activity beyond the predicted temporal limits of the canonical hemodynamic response model, but the underlying biophysical mechanisms are still not well understood. Experiment results suggest that stimulus intensity and image resolution can affect the sensitivity of fMRI to fast brain activity, possibly explaining recent observations of fast fMRI signals.
