Effects of Leaf Morphological and Chemical Properties on the Population Sizes of Epiphytes

Guojian Tang et al.

Summary: The distribution of microbes on leaf surfaces is influenced by factors such as leaf morphology, chemical properties, and wax content. The contents of soluble sugar and total phenolics on the leaf surfaces are positively correlated with those in the leaf tissues, and leaves with high wax content have better moisture retention capacity. The content of soluble sugar on the leaf surfaces is positively correlated with population sizes of lactic acid bacteria, aerobic bacteria, yeasts, and molds. Likewise, a positive correlation is found between the content of inorganic phosphorus on the leaf surfaces and population sizes of lactic acid bacteria and aerobic bacteria. The total amount of wax on leaf surfaces is negatively related to population sizes of microbes, especially aerobic bacteria and molds. On the contrary, the presence of trichomes provides a shelter for epiphytes and is positively correlated with population sizes of epiphytes.

Effects of leaf properties on the counts of microbes on the leaf surfaces of wheat, rye and triticale

Guojian Tang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the population sizes of microbial communities on leaf surfaces and the glaucousness and chemical composition of the leaves. The results showed that lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and yeasts had higher counts on non-glaucous leaf surfaces in wheat compared to glaucous leaf surfaces in rye and triticale. The counts of LAB and yeasts on leaf surfaces were mainly influenced by the level of available carbon sources and the presence of glaucousness.

Spraying sugars, growth temperatures and N application levels change epiphytic lactic acid bacteria composition on Italian ryegrass

Xinzhu Chen et al.

Summary: The results of this study suggest that spraying sugars, appropriate growth temperatures, and moderate nitrogen application can significantly increase the population sizes and species of lactic acid bacteria on Italian ryegrass. The population sizes and species of LAB on Italian ryegrass reached the highest levels at 15 degrees Celsius.

Yield and quality properties of silage maize and their influencing factors in China

Mengying Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, the relationships between yield and quality properties of silage maize were investigated using data from 196 publications in China. The results showed that increasing yield tended to decrease the nutritive value of the silage maize. Planting density and fertilization had opposite effects on yield and nutritive value. The geographically, the yield increased and the nutritive value decreased from warm regions to cold regions. The length of growth duration was found to be a major controlling factor for the patterns of yield and quality properties.

Transcriptome Analysis of Maize Ear Leaves under Long-Term Applications of Nitrogen Fertilizer and its Combinations with Phosphorus and Potassium Fertilizers

Jintao Liu et al.

Summary: This study used RNA-Seq analysis to investigate the molecular-level utilization of nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus fertilizers in maize plants. Results showed that the combination of NPK fertilizer enhanced chlorophyll, soluble sugar, and protein contents, as well as antioxidant enzyme activities, while reducing malondialdehyde content. Differential gene expression analysis revealed significant differences in genes related to nutrient absorption, transport, and metabolism, with the combination of N with K and/or P fertilizers inducing more differential genes compared to sole N application.

Long-term fertilization altered microbial community structure in an aeolian sandy soil in northeast China

Shiyu Zhang et al.

Summary: Soil microorganisms play essential roles in nutrient cycling and soil quality in agriculture. Long-term fertilization can impact soil microbial diversity and community structure, with chemical fertilizer combined with pig manure showing greater effects than chemical fertilizer alone. Soil properties such as pH and nutrient levels are key factors influencing bacterial and fungal taxa after years of fertilization in sandy soil.

Summary: This study compared the effects of different no-tillage methods on the yield, nutritive composition, and silage fermentation quality of forage wheat and Italian ryegrass. No-tillage sowing after rice harvest was found to be the best method for forage wheat and Italian ryegrass on winter fallow paddy fields.

Contributions of epiphytic microbiota on the fermentation characteristics and microbial composition of ensiled six whole crop corn varieties

R. Sun et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the variations in epiphytic microbial composition among six whole crop corn varieties and their impact on ensiling characteristics. Results showed differences in fermentation characteristics among the varieties, partly due to variations in epiphytic microbiomes in fresh WCC. The findings provide insights for selecting WCC varieties and inoculants for forage production.

Natural Fermentation Quality and Bacterial Community of 12 Pennisetum sinese Varieties in Southern China

Xuejuan Zi et al.

Summary: The silage quality of 12 varieties of Pennisetum sinese grown in Southern China varied, with poor fermentation quality attributed to the presence of undesirable bacteria. The chemical composition and fermentation characteristics of the silage were closely correlated with the bacterial community, while environmental factors significantly influenced the microbiome of the silage.

Summary: The study found that whole-plant corn silage had satisfactory fermentation quality, with silages from Heilongjiang and Inner Mongolia showing similar bacterial-succession patterns. The activity of Lactobacillus played a crucial role in maintaining good fermentation quality in whole-plant corn silage.
