Undergraduate researchers' graduate school intentions during COVID-19

Danielle X. Morales et al.

Summary: The study explores the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on undergraduate researchers' (UGRs) graduate school intentions, finding that the pandemic can strengthen UGRs' intentions when they face fewer difficulties, but weaken them when they have less competent faculty mentors. However, having more competent postgraduate mentors has a positive effect on UGRs' graduate school intentions, indicating that high-quality postgraduate mentorship can compensate for lower quality faculty mentorship. Immediate strategies are recommended to support specific groups of UGRs in pursuing graduate school aspirations during the pandemic.

Moving the Science Forward: Faculty Perceptions of Culturally Diverse Mentor Training Benefits, Challenges, and Support

Damani K. White-Lewis et al.

Summary: There is a need for deeper cultural awareness among postsecondary faculty, especially in institutions with developing research infrastructure and a high proportion of racially minoritized students. This study investigates the perceptions of faculty members who participated in culturally diverse mentor training activities. The findings show that the training helped faculty gain a better understanding of their mentees' challenges and develop improved communication strategies to appreciate cultural differences. However, faculty also faced challenges such as adopting culturally sustaining practices and balancing multiple commitments.

Measuring Research Mentors' Cultural Diversity Awareness for Race/Ethnicity in STEM: Validity Evidence for a New Scale

Angela Byars-Winston et al.

Summary: Research shows that enhancing research mentors' cultural diversity awareness can improve mentoring effectiveness, especially for underrepresented racial/ethnic minority groups in STEM fields. An assessment scale was developed to measure cultural diversity awareness related to race/ethnicity in research mentoring relationships, validated through various methods including qualitative data, cognitive interviews, and national item testing with mentors and mentees. The scale includes factors assessing attitudes, behavior, and confidence for mentors, and attitudes and behavior for mentees, aiming to evaluate the alignment between mentors and mentees' cultural diversity awareness scores.

A system-wide health sciences faculty mentor training program is associated with improved effective mentoring and institutional climate

JoAnn Trejo et al.

Summary: The study introduced a formally structured faculty mentor training program, and found that it helped improve faculty satisfaction, mentoring quality, and institutional climate, especially for underrepresented racial/ethnic faculty. The participation rate was high, with higher rates for women and underrepresented faculty. Participants reported improvements in mentoring quality, but were unsure if they were meeting the expectations of underrepresented mentees.
