Electronic Structure Modulation of Nickel Sites by Cationic Heterostructures to Optimize Ethanol Electrooxidation Activity in Alkaline Solution

Xiulan Li et al.

Summary: In order to produce hydrogen more efficiently, it is proposed to use ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) instead of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water electrolysis. Ni-based non-precious electrocatalysts are commonly used for the conversion of ethanol to acetic acid. Different selenide heterostructures (NiCoSe, NiFeSe, and NiCuSe) are prepared in this study, with the regulation of Ni sites by transition metals. Among the three heterojunctions, NiCoSe exhibits optimized charge distribution of Ni sites and outstanding catalytic activity. The effective modulations improve the kinetics of EOR by optimizing the d-band center and facilitating the adsorption and desorption of reaction intermediates.

Applications of In Situ Raman Spectroscopy on Rechargeable Batteries and Hydrogen Energy Systems

Xiu-Mei Lin et al.

Summary: The rapid economic growth leads to increased demand for energy, resulting in resource scarcity and environmental pollution caused by fossil fuel combustion. Electrochemical energy conversion and storage techniques such as rechargeable batteries, fuel cells, and water electrolysis offer promising solutions to these issues. However, improving their electrochemical performance is still challenging due to limited understanding of their reaction mechanisms. Therefore, in situ tracking and capturing intermediates for mechanism verification is significant.

Boosting ethanol oxidation by NiOOH-CuO nano-heterostructure for energy-saving hydrogen production and biomass upgrading

Hainan Sun et al.

Summary: Substituting the anodic oxygen evolution reaction with a thermodynamically more favorable ethanol oxidation reaction in water electrolysis provides a promising route for simultaneous biomass upgrading and energy-saving hydrogen production. The synthesis of a NiOOH-CuO nano-heterostructure anchored on a three-dimensional conductive Cu foam exhibits remarkable ethanol oxidation reaction performance. The hybrid water electrolysis cell using this catalyst as the anode shows low cell voltage for hydrogen generation at the cathode and high ethanol conversion rate to acetate, which can be easily separated.
