Post-glacial evolution of alpine environments in the western Mediterranean region: The Laguna Seca record

Alejandro Lopez-Aviles et al.

Summary: In this study, the sedimentary record of Laguna Seca was analyzed to understand the climate variations in the alpine environments of the western Mediterranean region since the last glacial-interglacial transition. The results show different sedimentation processes and paleoenvironmental changes in Laguna Seca, including the formation of a deep-water lake during the Bolling-Allerod period. This study provides important insights into the response of alpine wetland sites to climate variations.

Paleoclimate reconstruction of the last 36 kyr based on branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers in the Padul palaeolake record (Sierra Nevada, southern Iberian Peninsula)

Marta Rodrigo-Gamiz et al.

Summary: This study presents a quantitative reconstruction of the continental climate of the Iberian Peninsula during the last glacial cycle. By analyzing specific bacterial membrane lipids, a high-resolution mean annual air temperature record was obtained. The analysis of sedimentary records revealed stable compositions of the lipids, indicating changes in climate conditions. The results show similarities in the climate variability of the Padul region with high-latitude areas and the western Mediterranean.

Past 200 kyr hydroclimate variability in the western Mediterranean and its connection to the African Humid Periods

Jon Camuera et al.

Summary: This study presents a quantitative hydroclimate reconstruction for the last 200,000 years in the southern Iberian Peninsula based on pollen data. Six significant humid periods were identified and found to correlate with other Mediterranean paleohydrological records. The findings suggest similar climatic factors and North Atlantic ocean-atmospheric dynamics as the main drivers of both the Mediterranean and West Africa during high seasonality.

Climatic control on the Holocene hydrology of a playa-lake system in the western Mediterranean

Antonio Garcia-Alix et al.

Summary: Evaporitic lakes are characteristic of arid regions and sensitive to climate and environmental changes. This study analyzed the sedimentary record of a small saline pond in southwestern Iberia to reconstruct its paleohydrological evolution and assess anthropogenic disturbances. The results showed that the wettest period occurred during the Early Holocene, while the climate became drier during the Middle and Late Holocene. Human activities significantly disturbed the lake environment since the 20th century.

Reconstructing burnt area during the Holocene: an Iberian case study

Yicheng Shen et al.

Summary: This study examines the geographical patterns in changes in fire regimes using charcoal records from lake, bog, or other anoxic sediments. The authors derive quantitative estimates of burnt area from vegetation data and establish the relationship between fossil pollen assemblages and burnt area. The results show that this new method can be used to reconstruct changes in fire regimes quantitatively from pollen records.

Early anthropogenic change in western Mediterranean mountains (Sierra Nevada, SE Spain)

Francisca Alba-Sanchez et al.

Summary: This study analyzed two pollen records from both sides of Sierra Nevada in the western Mediterranean, revealing the early human impact on these mountains, including changes in forest cover, agriculture, livestock, mining, and metallurgy. The results suggest that human activities started earlier than expected and have had significant influences on the landscape and biodiversity of the region. Proper conservation strategies should consider long-term perspectives and the preservation of traditional human activities to maintain current biodiversity.

Chronological control and centennial-scale climatic subdivisions of the Last Glacial Termination in the western Mediterranean region

Jon Camuera et al.

Summary: By studying a high-resolution paleoclimatic record from the Padul wetland in the southern Iberian Peninsula, this research reveals the climatic characteristics and non-stationary nature of climate change during the Last Glacial Termination. The study provides a detailed subdivision of HS1 and suggests that climate variability may be related to periodic solar forcing.

Paleohydrological dynamics in the Western Mediterranean during the last glacial cycle

Antonio Garcia-Alix et al.

Summary: Studying the paleohydrological dynamics in the western Mediterranean region provides insights into the impact of precipitation and moisture source changes on hydrogen isotopic signature, revealing the variations in precipitation patterns and their potential mechanisms. Additionally, the identification of the Western Mediterranean Humid Period (WMHP) and corresponding shifts in precipitation patterns suggest a connection to changes in the main rainy season.

Latest Holocene paleoenvironmental and paleoclimate reconstruction from an alpine bog in the Western Mediterranean region: The Borreguil de los Lavaderos de la Reina record (Sierra Nevada)

Alejandro Lopez-Aviles et al.

Summary: Various organic and inorganic geochemical analyses were conducted in the sedimentary record of the Borreguil de los Lavaderos de la Reina in the southern Iberian Peninsula. This study revealed an overall aridification trend and reduction in aquatic environments over the past 2700 years, driven by insolation and North Atlantic Oscillation trends. The environmental evolution of BdlR-03 can be divided into four phases, showing fluctuations in precipitation and climate conditions influenced by human activities and natural factors.
