On the origin of the strain hardening mechanisms of Ni20Cr alloy manufactured by laser powder bed fusion

Shubham Sanjay Joshi et al.

Summary: In this article, the basic strain hardening mechanisms of AM (LPBF) alloys of a theoretically monophasic Ni20Cr alloy manufactured by laser powder bed fusion are investigated. The microstructure and tensile mechanical behavior of the alloys are analyzed and compared with conventionally manufactured Ni20Cr alloy. The results show that the LPBF samples exhibit an increase in yield stress due to effective stress and backstress modification. Additionally, the strain hardening mechanisms are modified for LPBF manufactured samples compared to cast ones. The study also highlights the contribution of specific LPBF microstructure features to stress and strain hardening.

Dependence of microstructures on fatigue performance of polycrystals: A comparative study of conventional and additively manufactured 316L stainless steel

Luqing Cui et al.

Summary: The fatigue properties and microstructural evolution of 316L stainless steel manufactured by laser powder bed fusion were studied and compared with the wrought counterpart. The as-built L-PBF 316LSS exhibited a unique microstructure with high serrated grain boundaries, bimodal grain structure, nano-precipitates, solidification cell structures, and chemical segregations. The hardness and fatigue resistance of L-PBF 316LSS were significantly improved compared to the wrought solution annealed samples due to its unique microstructural characteristics and enhanced planar slip.

A comparative study of additive manufactured and wrought SS316L: Pre-existing dislocations and grain boundary characteristics

Fengxia Wei et al.

Summary: This study compares the mechanical properties of additively manufactured (AM) SS316L and conventionally manufactured (CM) SS316L and finds that AM SS316L has more dislocations and low angle grain boundaries, resulting in different strengthening mechanisms. Furthermore, the distribution of coincident site lattice boundaries is more diverse in AM samples. Additionally, the behavior of AM grain boundaries under tensile strain is significantly different from CM samples.

Deformation faulting and dislocation-cell refinement in a selective laser melted 316L stainless steel

Feng He et al.

Summary: The selective laser melted (SLM) 316L stainless steel (316L SS) has superior tensile ductility and doubled yield strength compared to its wrought counterpart. The improved yield strength is attributed to unique cellular substructures featured by Cr/Mo-segregation and trapped dislocations. The excellent ductility is mainly understood from deformation twinning and two newly discovered deformation mechanisms, deformation faulting and dislocation cell refinement, which dominate the whole tensile deformation significantly.

Mechanical, microstructural and in-situ neutron diffraction investigations of equi-biaxial Bauschinger effects in an interstitial-free DC06 steel

Markus Haertel et al.

Summary: This research investigates the Bauschinger effects in sheet metal DC06 under equi-biaxial loading conditions. The results show that the material exhibits distinct Bauschinger effects when subjected to equi-biaxial load path changes, which differ from similar observations under uniaxial loading. These effects can be explained by considering the evolution of dislocation densities and the formation of substructures, as well as the influence of residual stresses.

Effect of annealing treatment on microstructure evolution and deformation behavior of 304 L stainless steel made by laser powder bed fusion

Hongzhuang Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the microstructural evolution of laser powder bed fused 304 L austenitic stainless steel after stress-relieving annealing and solution annealing. The results show the migration of dislocations and the formation of subgrain boundaries during annealing, leading to changes in strength and ductility. The study also reveals the distortion networks and misorientation ranges in the samples. Tensile deformation results in deformation twins in different oriented grains, dependent on the annealing conditions.

New insights on cellular structures strengthening mechanisms and thermal stability of an austenitic stainless steel fabricated by laser powder-bed-fusion

Thomas Voisin et al.

Summary: The rapid solidification cellular structures in 316L austenitic stainless steels fabricated by laser powder-bed-fusion were found to have specific crystallographic orientations in cell walls, which act as barriers to dislocation movement and contribute to material strengthening. Additionally, oxide precipitates confined inside cell walls also enhance the material's strength. Overall, the understanding of these intrinsic characteristics and strengthening mechanisms can help improve the material's thermal stability and high strength.

Summary: The relationship between microstructures and hardening nature of laser powder bed fused (L-PBF) 316 L stainless steel has been studied, showing that the hardness of the alloy is predominantly governed by GNDs. During annealing treatments, the migration of GNDs and the decrease of SSD density play important roles in the hardness variation of the material.
