CFD-DEM study of a V-shaped Down-tube pyrolysis Reactor: Flow and heat transfer between heat carrier and biomass

Ranran Kong et al.

Summary: The flow and heat transfer characteristics of heat carrier and biomass particles in a V-shaped down-tube reactor were studied using computational fluid dynamics-discrete element method (CFD-DEM) modeling. The effects of different mass ratios of heat carrier to biomass particles and heat carrier diameters on the temperature distribution, heating rate, and residence time of biomass particles in a reactor were compared. The results showed that the temperature in the reactor increased with the increase of the mass ratio. Increasing the heat carrier diameter had a significant influence on the residence time of the biomass particles.

A review on CFD simulation of biomass pyrolysis in fluidized bed reactors with emphasis on particle-scale models

Hao Luo et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the recent advances in multi-scale computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of biomass pyrolysis in fluidized bed reactors. The interconnection among molecular-scale, particle-scale, CFD cell-scale, and reactor-scale are discussed, along with the frameworks of Eulerian-Lagrangian (E-L) and Eulerian multi-fluid model (MFM). The theoretical basis and practical applications of particle-scale models, as well as their coupling with CFD cell-scale and molecular-scale models, are highlighted. The future work to develop reliable and efficient CFD models for simulating biomass pyrolysis in fluidized bed reactors is outlined.

Numerical study of the biomass pyrolysis process in a spouted bed reactor through computational fluid dynamics

Shiliang Yang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the physical and thermochemical characteristics of biomass pyrolysis in a lab-scale spouted bed reactor using a reactive multiphase particle-in-cell approach. Results show that the distribution of biomass particles affects the spatial distributions of gas thermochemical properties. Intensive turbulent flow of gas phase exists in the spout region, which is enhanced with increasing gas inlet velocity and pyrolysis temperature.

Mixing and segregation of binary mixtures of biomass and silica sand in a fluidized bed

Tolu Emiola-Sadiq et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the mixing and segregation of binary mixtures involving biomass materials in a fluidized bed, focusing on the axial and radial distribution of biomass particles. Results showed that increasing fluidizing velocity improved mixing extent, while the mixing index decreased beyond a certain biomass loading threshold.

Influence of particle residence time distribution on the biomass pyrolysis in a rotary kiln

Mario Pichler et al.

Summary: Rotary kilns are commonly used in industry for various operations, and the influence of particle residence time distribution on biomass pyrolysis in such kilns has been numerically investigated in this study. By comparing different modeling approaches and parameters, it was found that neglecting particle residence time distribution may not always be a valid assumption under certain operating conditions.

Liqiang Lu et al.

Summary: This research utilized a glued-sphere computational fluid dynamic discrete element method to investigate the effects of biomass particle shapes and sizes on pyrolysis. The study revealed significant influences of surface areas and mass distributions on interphase heat transfer and chemical reactions, with neglectable intra-particle heat transfer for certain conditions. Different reactor types were simulated to analyze conversion distributions, showing the best balance between uniform and fast conversion in the fluidized bed.
