Recent Advances in Hybrid Energy Harvesting Technologies Using Roadway Pavements: A Review of the Technical Possibility of Using Piezo-thermoelectrical Combinations

Ando Ny Aina Randriantsoa et al.

Summary: We are currently undergoing an energy transition due to pollution and depletion issues with fossil energy sources. This study examines existing energy harvesting systems for ambient energy sources on roadway pavements, such as thermal energy from solar radiation and mechanical vibrations induced by passing vehicles. The research also summarizes efforts on hybrid energy harvesting systems. These technologies can generate green energy without negative environmental impact, but the study did not address costs, lifecycle analyses, or the impact on road structures.

A wearable collaborative energy harvester combination of frequency-up conversion vibration, ambient light and thermal energy

Ge Shi et al.

Summary: In this study, a wearable multi-source collaborative energy harvester (MC-EH) is proposed to overcome the instability of a single-source EH. The MC-EH utilizes a customized ring monocrystalline silicon photovoltaic cell, a thermoelectric generator, and a Macro-Fiber Composite (MFC) to harvest ambient light energy, thermal energy, and low frequency vibration energy, respectively. The MC-EH can efficiently extract and convert these different forms of energy, providing electric power for wearable devices.

Low-grade waste heat recovery scenarios: Pyroelectric, thermomagnetic, and thermogalvanic thermal energy harvesting

Sunghoon Hur et al.

Summary: Identifying reliable and sustainable sources of electricity is a major challenge, as most energy-generation mechanisms produce waste heat. Over 60% of primary energy is wasted as heat each year. Efforts are being made to convert this waste heat into usable electrical energy using diverse energy conversion materials. This review focuses on three energy conversion mechanisms (pyroelectric, thermomagnetic, and thermogalvanic generators) and discusses their theoretical basis, critical parameters, and current status. The challenges and opportunities in low-grade waste-heat recovery are explored in terms of material science and structural design. This review provides an overview of thermal-energy-harvesting research progress, future challenges, and opportunities.

Ferroelectrically augmented contact electrification enables efficient acoustic energy transfer through liquid and solid media

Hyun Soo Kim et al.

Summary: As the demand for portable electronic devices increases, wireless energy transfer (WET) is becoming more accessible. Acoustic energy transfer (AET) can be an alternative to electromagnetic (EM) wave based WET. By tuning the work function of the triboelectric layer, a powerful triboelectric AET module is presented, which successfully transmitted 8 mW of electric power underwater at a distance of 6 cm.

Measurement of natural frequency and mechanical damping of thin brass diaphragm by pulsed laser generated vibrations

Muhammad Sohail Azam et al.

Summary: In this study, a damped harmonic oscillator model was used to fit the amplitude variations of a clamped vibrating circular plate induced by nanosecond pulsed laser. The goal was to estimate the mechanical damping and natural frequency of the sample. Experimental results showed a close match between the measured vibration frequencies and the finite element analysis modal frequencies, with an error of less than 2%. Additionally, the elastic parameters of the sample were obtained by comparing the first two mode frequencies with known data for brass. Overall, this study presents a unique approach to determine mechanical parameters and elastic parameters using a single laser pulse impulse excited measurement for thin clamped targets.

Comparative Study of Tapered Shape Bimorph Piezoelectric Energy Harvester via Finite Element Analysis

Md Nahid Hasan et al.

Summary: The power efficiency of tapered shape bimorph piezoelectric energy harvesters, specifically triangular and trapezoidal, was compared using finite element analysis. The study revealed that triangular harvesters generate more power and require lower resistance for maximum power generation at resonance, making them more efficient in sensing applications compared to trapezoidal harvesters.
